“It is a little late in the season, but sometimes you’ll see them out. We still have a few warm days before fall is here.” He looks at me. “Are you cold?”

I nod. “It’s why I’ve been wearing sweaters.”

He furrows his brows. “Huh. Wolf shifters don’t get cold.”

After that, Parker scoots closer to me. Our legs touch under the table and he keeps a firm grip on my hand.

What is this boy doing? Can he not see that I’m falling so hard for him? He’s only going to make things worse for me.

Eating dinner with Parker’s family is, as always, chaotic. But I love the chaos and the noise. I could get used to this. It makes me wonder if I have any siblings out there. Whoever abandoned me might’ve had more kids. And if they did, are they like me? I have so many questions and the closer I get to an answer, the further I feel from finding out the truth.

Toward the end of dinner, somebody walks out the back door of their house and onto the deck. I look up in time to see brown eyes that are narrowed at me.

I’m suddenly aware of how close Parker and I are sitting. Now that Will and Blaine have told me the truth about soulmates, I shouldn’t keep getting this close.

“Will, are you hungry?” Mrs. Thorne asks. “There are plenty of burgers. Join us.”

“No thanks. I already ate.” Will smiles at her, then turns toward me. “I actually came to walk Henley home.”

“I can take her home,” Parker objects.

Mr. Thorne holds up a hand toward Parker. “Will, that would be great if you walked Henley home. I need to talk to my son alone anyway.”

I glance at Parker to gauge his reaction. His jaw ticks and he makes a tight fist. When he sees me looking at him, he smiles. “It’s okay, Henley. Will is going to walk you home. I’ll see you on Monday.”

Monday.

Meaning I won’t see him on Saturday or Sunday. My chest aches, but I know it’s for the best. Parker and I probably do need distance.

I let go of Parker’s hand and stand up from the table. “Thanks for letting me stay for dinner.”

Lucy gets up from her seat and runs over to me. She squeezes me tight in a hug. “Come back soon, please.”

“I will,” I promise her, hugging her back.

The truth is, I’m not sure when I can come back. I have a feeling that Mr. Thorne doesn’t like me hanging out with Parker anymore than Will does.

Turning, I follow Will toward the house. I turn to look at Parker one last time, but Will steps in the way before I can.

“Let’s go, Henley.”

I glare at him, but I listen. In front of Parker’s family isn’t the right time to argue with Will.

Begrudgingly, I walk through the house. Will follows me closely. Before we get to the front door, he grabs my arm to stop me.

“Henley, what are you doing?” Will asks. “I thought I told you to stay away from Parker.”

“I almost died. Or maybe I did die, I don’t know,” I blurt out.

“What?” He shakes his head.

“Today.” I tuck a piece of hair behind my ear. “A tree limb fell and hit me on the head. Parker said that I died, but as he was taking me to the pack doctor, I came back to life.”

He cocks his head to the side. “That’s not somethinganysupernatural can do.”

“I know. Parker told me. But I think it freaked him out,” I admit. “Don’t be too mad at him, okay?”

Will gives me a curt nod. “We’ll talk more on the walk home.”
