“I was. But…” he lets his voice trail off.

Mr. Thorne nods. “Blaine. I should’ve known he would tell her.”

“Actually, Will told me,” I inform Mr. Thorne, not wanting Blaine to get in trouble. “Well, heshowedme.”

Mr. Throne cocks an eyebrow. “He transformed in front of you without warning you first?”

I nod.

“Did you run?”

“No. Um, I did pet him though.”

Parker busts out laughing. “I wish I could have seen that. I bet Will was furious.”

“Hard to tell—he’s always mad.”

Even Mr. Thorne cracks a smile. “You two take a seat. I’m going to get our burgers started.”

The back door opens and Mrs. Thorne walks out, carrying a big platter of patties. Mr. Thorne takes them from her, sitting them on the counter by the grill.

“Let me know when you’re ready for the next round,” Mrs. Thorne says.

My jaw drops open as I look at Parker. “Is the whole pack coming over for dinner or something?”

Parker smirks. “Just my family.”

“I only want one,” I warn him.

“Shifters eat a lot,” he explains. “We burn a lot of calories when we shift.”

Now that I think about it, theydideat a lot the last time I came over. I thought they just really liked gumbo.

“I guess that means I’m not a shifter then.”

Parker and I sit down at a wooden picnic table just off the back deck. There is a long wooden platform leading out to the lake behind their home. I can see the same lake out the back of our house, but we don’t have any deck leading to it like they do.

“You’re not a shifter,” Parker confirms. “If you were, you would’ve already shifted. Besides that, we know every kind of shifter that exists. We’d be able to tell what you are.”

What I am… what kind ofsupernaturalI am. It’s still so weird that I’m not human. I’m not sure that my brain has accepted that fact. I look human. And most days I feel human enough. Then again, the most human I’ve ever felt has been when I’m hanging out with wolf shifters. If I didn’t see Will transform with my own eyes, I might not believe it.

Parker grabs ahold of my hand beneath the table. I want to ask him if we should be holding hands in front of his family. I saw the look his dad gave him earlier. But I don’t want to risk his family overhearing, especially since I know that wolf shifters have really good hearing.

“We’ll figure out what you are,” Parker assures me.

I swallow hard, wondering what will happen when they do figure it out. Will I be sent away? Or will I be allowed to stay here?

The sound of screaming has me turning my head. I spot Lucy chasing the youngest Thorne sibling with a frog in her hand. Carson’s scream pierces my ear drums as he runs from her. Lucy laughs as she tries to get her younger brother to touch it.

“Do you still think it’s quiet here?” Parker raises an eyebrow.

I shrug. “Carson’s screams have got nothing on the thoughts of a bunch of dramatic teenagers. Or a New York City subway. Dad tried that a couple of times. It always landed me in the hospital for a week.”

“A week?” His eyes widen.

I want to tell him more, but I’m very aware of the fact that his dad can hear every word we’re saying. The last thing I want is for Mr. Thorne to talk to my dad about anything I tell Parker.

“Isn’t it a little cold for frogs to be out?” I ask, changing the subject.
