I look into his blue eyes. “Maybe we should go somewhere and make out instead.”

I expect him to laugh, but he doesn’t. Instead he says, “Don’t tempt me.”

My heart skips a beat, but my cheeks grow warm as I realize he can hear. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow,” Parker agrees. “Call me if you need me. I’ll come pick you up. My parents do like you. Don’t let Will make you think they don’t.”

I’m not so sure aboutthat. Maybe they like me as a person—they like me as Daniel’s daughter. But they don’t like me hanging out with Parker. I can’t blame them for that. They want their son to wait on his soulmate and not fall in love with another girl. They want to spare him the heartbreak.

Parker opens his door. I wonder what he’s doing. I get out and he hurries around.

“You’re supposed to wait for me to open the door,” Parker says. He grabs my backpack from the backseat.

“Sorry.” I chew on my lip to stop the grin. Parker has set the bar high. If I have a soulmate out there, I’m not sure how he’s going to compare.

He grabs ahold of my hand and walks me onto the front porch of my house. We stop by the front door and he passes my backpack toward me.

“I will see you tomorrow, but please call me if you need me tonight. I don’t care what anybody thinks. We’re friends. And the way I feel about you…” his voice trails off and he shakes his head. “I just want you to know that I’m here for you. Call me after you talk with your dad. I want to know.”

I nod, not knowing what to say after that.

Parker likes me more than he should. But I can’t allow myself to fall for him. I’m only going to lose him. This only ends one way—with us both having a broken heart.

I stand by the front door and watch him make his way back to his Jeep. He turns around to look at me one last time and waves before getting in. I stand there as he drives off, my heart racing embarrassingly fast.

Before going inside, I take a few deep breaths.

My dad’s car is in the driveway, so I know he’s home. And the conversation we’re about to have isn’t going to be an easy one, but it is well past due.

Pushing the front door open, I head in. I set my backpack on the floor by the door and make my way toward the kitchen. I hear my dad doing something in there. When I walk in, I see him with a couple of boxes of pizza in front of him.

“Want a slice?” He slides the box toward me as I sit down beside him.

“I already ate.” I tuck a piece of hair behind my ear. “Can we talk?”

He pushes his own plate away, giving me his full attention. “This sounds serious.”

I shrug. “I just want to know more about my adoption.”

“I told you everything already,” Dad says. “You were dropped off at the hospital when I was working. Nobody ever saw who dropped you off, you were found in the waiting room. I took one look at you and knew you had to come home with me.”

He’s told me that a million times, but he’s left out one very important piece. “Because you knew I wasn’t human.”

Dad’s face pales, but he nods. “I knew I couldn’t risk you getting adopted by a human family. But it was more than that. It’s always been more than that. I am your dad in all the ways that matter, Henley.”

“I know.” Tears press against the back of my eyes. “I was mad at you when I found out, but Parker helped me realize that I haven’t been honest with you either.”

“What haven’t you been honest about?” Dad asks.

I open my mouth, then shut it. My hand shakes, so I put it against my leg. “Can, I, uh, ask you a question?”

He nods.

“Will told me about—”

Dad cuts me off. “Will Lancaster?”

“Yeah. He’s my friend.” I grin, thinking how Will would react if he heard me call him a friend.
