I put my hand on his arm. “I have to talk to you. It’s really important.”

“I have to find the wolf,” he objects.

“That’s what I need to talk to you about.”

Finally, his eyes fade from amber to blue. “You saw the other wolf?”

I nod. “But you have to promise you will listen to the whole story before you run off. It’s important.”

He nods. “Okay.”

“It was Ben.”

Parker makes a fist. “I’m going to kill him.”

“You can’t.” I grab onto his fist, trying to get him to uncurl his fingers. He eventually relaxes it and holds onto my hand.

“I’m listening,” he grits out through clenched teeth.

“He doesn’t know what he is,” I explain. “I said hi to him because I thought he was a pack member. And he shifted in front of me. He knew that I wasn’t like the other humans. But he told me he’s a werewolf. And I explained that he’s a wolf shifter. So I asked him about his pack and his parents, but he doesn’t have parents. He’s in foster care. And he has no idea that he’s a wolf shifter or that other wolf shifters exist. I was going to talk to him, but he heard you and ran off. But you have to help him.”

Parker nods. “Yeah. You’re right. He can’t be with a foster family. It’s a risk. He could shift and expose us all. I will talk to my dad and get him moved in with a wolf family.”

My entire body relaxes as I realize he’s not going to kill Ben. “Thank you. I know you don’t like him, but he’s just a confused kid.”

He smirks. “It’s not that I don’t like him. I was worried he was invading our territory. But more than that, I thought maybe he was into you.”

I give him a pointed look. “He’s probably fourteen. And even if he wasn’t a kid, you already know how I feel.”

“How you feel?” Parker takes a step closer to me.

“About you.” I shrug one shoulder.

With his free hand, he gently caresses his hand against my cheek and tucks a piece of hair behind my ear. I shiver at his touch which only makes his smile grow wider.

“How do you feel about me?” he asks.

I look up into his blue eyes. “Too much.”

The sound of shuffling in the leaves has Parker and me quickly backing up from one another. I look over at the noise and see Will walk out from the tree line.

“What’s going on?” Will asks, looking between Parker and me.

“I need to talk to my dad,” Parker says, turning to look at Will. “Can you hang out with Henley until I get back?”

“That’s not necessary,” I object.

Will grins. “I don’t think that will be a problem.”

“Great.” Parker looks at me. “I’ll be back soon.” He turns and runs off in the direction of his house. Before I can blink, he’s gone.

I turn toward Will. “You really don’t have to hang out with me. I’m just going to walk back to my house.”

“I’ll come with you,” he says.

I guess I’m not getting rid of him that easily.

We pace beside one another, Will remaining tense but quiet.
