“Hey, Will?” I say, breaking the silence. “Do wolf shifters always have to do what the alpha says?”

He glances over at me. “Do you think I’d waste my time walking you home if I had a choice?”

I flinch at the harshness of his words.

Will frowns, turning his attention ahead of us. “I saw you with Parker back there. I told you about soulmates, but you’re still…” his voice trails off and he shakes his head.

He’s right. But he definitely could be nicer about it.

“I can’t seem to help myself. There is just something about him.” My cheeks grow warm with my admission. “Will, I want us to be friends. I know I’m not a wolf shifter, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still get along.”

Will glares at me. “Every supernatural should stick with their own kind.”

I tuck a piece of hair behind my ear. “But Parker told me you’re a hybrid. That means your parents are—”

“I shouldn’t even exist, Henley. Hybrids are dangerous.” He shakes his head. “Falling in love with another species isn’t a good thing. Every supernatural should wait for their mate.”

I stop walking and grab onto Will’s arm to get him to stay with me. “What do you mean, Will? Your parents weren’t mates?”

He lets out a breath. “Wolf shifters can’t have children with somebody who isn’t their mate. But my mom was an elemental. Elementals can have children with anybody, though they typically wait for their mate. Not my parents—they had my sister and then me. I was five when they were caught. My parents were killed for their crime. My older sister was sent to live with the elementals and I came here. I live with my aunt.”

“They separated you from your sibling and killed your parents?” I put a hand to the base of my throat.

His eyes harden. “My parents broke the law. They shouldn’t have had children. As for my sister, sheshouldbe with the elementals. She’s an elemental, not a wolf shifter. And she’s powerful. They have to keep an eye on her.”

Will looks away as he says it.

Powerful?

“Maybe being a supernatural isn’t such a good thing.” I keep my eyes on Will, trying to gauge his reaction. “Will, you know that’s not normal, right? Your parents shouldn’t be killed for falling in love. And you sister… you two should be together. It’s not right to separate family.”

His brown eyes meet mine, his expression softening. “You are new to the supernatural community, so you don’t understand. These laws are in place for a reason. One time my sister got mad and cause a tornado that leveled an entire town. She was just a kid. Being that strong isn’t normal. It’s why it’s against the law for an elemental to have children with somebody other than another elemental. The only exception is for mates. And even then, their children are taught control very early. They’re always watched.”

I swallow hard. “And you’re sure I’m not an elemental, right?”

“You’re not,” he promises.

I let out a breath of relief. Will might think that his parents beingmurderedis normal, but it’s not. And if these elemental people kill supernaturals for falling in love, I don’t want anything to do with them.

“I think it’s cool that you’re a hybrid,” I tell him. “It means you’re kind of like me, right? Because neither of us really belong anywhere.”

He clenches his jaw. “I belong right where I am. So what if I have some control over the wind—I’m a wolf shifter. You’re not. You’re the one who doesn’t belong here.”

My chest aches at his words. I lower my head. “Right. I’m sorry.”

Will lets out his breath in a huff. “You know, people don’t normally just speak their mind like you do.”

“Sorry. I’m not used to talking to people. I’ve been isolated my whole life.” I worry my bottom lip between my teeth.

He frowns again. “And then after, you make me feel bad for reacting the way I do. But you’re just really… offensive sometimes.”

“That doesn’t happen with anybody else.” I dare to look into his brown eyes. “Maybe you get offended too easily.”

Will grins. “I see why Parker likes you.”

He starts walking forward again. I take a minute to process his words before walking after him.

Will’s mood is ever changing and it’s hard to keep up, but I still like him. And after hearing about his parents and his sister, I feel like I understand him better now.
