“He was just curious.” I furrow my brows. “Parker, there isn’t anything special about me. I’m just a chick who can read minds. I’m hardly even supernatural.”

“You can read minds and apparently come back to life.” Parker dares me to argue.

I press my lips firmly together.

I kind of wanted to forget that ever happened. Just like I am trying to forget about my wings.

He smirks, knowing he’s won. “Before we head out there, I just wanted to tell you, a lot of the pack is going to be here tonight. Everybody wants to welcome Ben. As much as it kills me, I can’t dothisin front of them.” He motions at our hands. “They wouldn’t understand and I don’t want to make things hard on my dad. I just wanted to tell you so I don’t hurt your feelings. I care deeply about you and if I could, I’d never stop touching you.”

My heart skips a beat and I’m not even embarrassed that Parker can hear.

His smile widens. “Come on. Let’s get out there.”

“One more question,” I say before he can get out. “Why did you invite me? This is a pack thing.”

“You’re an honorary pack member, I told you that. Besides, Ialwayswant you here.” With that, he gets out of the Jeep.

And my heart races embarrassingly fast.

Parker opens my door for me, but he doesn’t try to hold my hand. I’m glad he told me because my feelings probably would’ve been hurt if he hadn’t. I like touching Parker more than I should. But I don’t want to cause problems for him.

We walk side by side around the house and into the backyard. There is a bonfire lit close to the lake and there are a bunch of people standing and sitting around, talking with one another. Even though Parker and I aren’t touching, I can’t hear a single one of them.

“So this is what it’s like to be normal,” I comment.

Parker raises an eyebrow at me. “What do you mean?”

I point at my head. “Silence. I can’t hear a single thought. I don’t know what anybody here is thinking.”

He grins. “You’re anything but normal, Henley.”

Parker stops to talk to a group of shifters I recognize from school. He introduces me to them, but I spot Blaine standing close to the bonfire, so I excuse myself and make my way toward him.

“Hey, Vixen.” Blaine grins widely as he greets me.

“Hey.” I stop beside him.

“Why am I not surprised to see you?” He cocks one eyebrow at me. “Will is going to be really upset.”

“When is he evernotupset with me?”

“Good point.”

I glance around at the rest of the pack. A few of them are glancing our way, but most of them are too engrossed in their own conversations to realize I’m here.

“I’m glad you’re here,” Blaine tells me. “You definitely make things interesting.”

I glance up at him, tucking a piece of hair behind my ear. “You and Will have good reasons to hate me. With your parents, I mean. And with what you suspect is going on with Parker and me.”

“It’s not so much as a suspicion as it is Iknow. You two have feelings for one another. It’s why, even now, he can’t take his eyes off of you.”

I glance over to where Parker is standing. He’s surrounded by wolf shifters, but he keeps glancing my way. I can tell from how tense he is that he’s anxious. Is he anxious because he wants to be next to me?

I sigh, turning back to Blaine. “If I had known about soulmates a few months ago, I would have said that it sounded really great. What girl doesn’t want to find their soulmate?”

“But then you met Parker.” Blaine focuses his eyes on me. “Love doesn’t always make sense—like with my dad, for instance. The worst part is, the wolf shifter he was unfaithful with is happily mated now. They have nine kids. When I see them around pack land, I feel resentful sometimes. My parentshateone another and she gets to be happy. It doesn’t seem fair. But life rarely is. And my life really isn’t so bad. I have great friends and the best pack.”

I could argue that itisbad. Having your parents constantly argue has got to be tiring.
