What just happened? Is that another power? And what kind of power is it? Fire teleportation? My head hurts just thinking about it.

I head toward my front door, about to head inside, when I hear a sound behind me. I turn around and see Parker standing there.

I put a hand to my racing heart. “You scared me.”

He furrows his brows looking at me. “You disappeared.”

My heart races even faster. Does he know? About the fire thing?

“I was looking for you,” Parker says. “You were talking to Will. I talked with an elder for a couple of minutes and when I started looking for you, you weren’t there. I ran all the way here. How did you get here so fast?”

I shrug. “Will didn’t want me there, so I walked home.”

He looks at me. “Who cares what Will wants? I want you there.”

My heart skips a beat. “I want to be wherever you are.”

Parker takes a step forward and wraps his arms around me. “Don’t leave like that again. You scared me. I couldn’t handle it if something happened to you.”

“I’m sorry.”

Parker pulls back. “Why do you smell like smoke?”

“Maybe the bonfire.” My stomach is in knots as I pray he doesn’t realize that the smell isme. I’m still not exactly sure what happened, but I know it had to do with fire.

How did I catch on fire like that and not burn? There isn’t a burn anywhere on me. There are no black marks. No burnt spots on my clothes. If it wasn’t for the smell of smoke, I could convince myself that I hallucinated the entire thing.

But I did get home fast. Instantly.

Maybe I should tell Parker the truth.

But what if he knows what I am? And what if he sends me away to live with my own kind?

“What did Will say to make you want to leave?” Parker asks.

“He just…” I swallow the lump in my throat as tears press against the back of my eyes. “Will cares about you a lot. And he’s worried that I’m going to try to date you. He just wants to protect you. So, he was reminding me that you’re waiting on a soulmate. And Iknowyou are. I keep trying to tell myself that, but every time I’m around you, I forget. I’m sorry.”

Parker grabs ahold of my hand. “I’m only eighteen. Who knows how old I will be when I meet her—maybe I won’t meet her at all.”

I shake my head. “No. You will meet her. And even if you didn’t, what if I have a soulmate?”

He backs away, letting go of my hand. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry. I just… I like you a lot. I don’t even want a soulmate.”

Parker’s blue eyes lock onto mine. “I’ve always wanted a soulmate. I’ve been taught my whole life how special and wonderful it is. But then you came into town and now I realize that I want a choice.”

My heart aches. How can his words equally hurt and excite me?

“Soulmates aren’t supposed to be complicated. My parents fell in love instantly.” He shakes his head back and forth. “They’ve lived a happy life together. That is how it’s supposed to happen.”

“But what about Will and Blaine? Their parents—”

He cuts me off. “Blaine’s parents are the exception. Everybody else in our pack has a happy marriage. I’ve never heard of anybody else fighting like that. As for Will, his parents’ deaths were a tragedy. Elementals… well, their laws aren’t always fair. It wasn’t wolf shifters that punished them—we would never kill somebody forthat. The elementals think that hybrids are dangerous.”

I swallow hard. “Do elementals control fire?”

“Yes. Fire elementals scare me.” He shivers. “They’re the most dangerous of all the elementals.”
