I tuck the thought away for another time.

“Will you cover for me if I go after Will?” I ask.

Blaine nods. “You’ll be safe with Will. Even if he’s mad at you, he won’t let anything happen to you. Parker knows that.”

I let out a breath. “Thank you. I just… I don’t want anything to come between Parker and Will, especially not me.”

“It’ll all work out,” Blaine promises.

I wish I had his optimism.

Before I can talk myself out of it, I race down the path that Will took earlier, hoping it’ll be easy to find him.

How did it not burn?

When I find Will, he’s standing on the edge of a cliff, looking down at the valley below. His entire body stiffens when he hears me shuffling loudly through the leaves. I know from walking with him and Parker that wolf shifters are quiet when they walk. Whatever kind of supernatural I am, stealthiness isn’t one of my powers. I trip over the root of a tree and nearly fall, making even more noise.

Will lets out a long breath. “You’re obnoxiously loud.”

“Sorry,” I mumble under my breath. I start to climb up next to him.

He holds up both his hands. “You should probably stay down there. Knowing you, you’d trip off the cliff and take me with you. You’d likely get us both killed.”

I start to argue that I could just fly us safely to the ground, but to do that I’d have to admit to having wings. Instead, a just grin and shrug. “You’re probably right.”

“How can you even see out here?” Will asks, crossing his arms over his chest.

“What do you mean?” I cock my head to the side.

“It’s dark,” he says. “You shouldn’t be able to see.”

“I don’t know. I can see fine.” I glance around and see that he’s right. Itisdark. But my vision has adjusted.

“That’s not normal,” he explains. “It is for wolves and some supernaturals, but not for humans. I have no idea how you haven’t figured out sooner that you’re not human.”

I know he means that as an insult. “How was I supposed to know? I wasn’t raised by a human, even though I thought he was. All of this seemednormalto me. I’ve never known any different.”

Will glares at me. “How do you always make me feel bad for speaking the truth?”

“I’m sorry.” I lower my head, not knowing what he wants me to say to him. “I know you hate me, but I consider you a friend. I’m really sorry for whatever I did to offend you.”

“Offend me—” His voice cuts off.

I glance up and see him looking down at the ground curiously. One second, he is standing on the side of the cliff. The next, the ground gives way.

“Will!” I scream, running up the cliff until I get where the ground gave away. I look down and see that Will is hanging onto the root of a tree with one hand.

“Go get help,” Will tells me.

I shake my head. “Let me help you!”

“You’re not strong enough,” Will says, his voice strained. “Don’t argue.”

But I know Will can’t keep holding on. The root is going to break or Will is going to lose his grip.

I reach for his hand, my heart pounding faster than it ever has before. The moment my hand touches Will’s, I see a bright light.
