Will Parker figure it out?

He turns to look at me. “I’ve got to talk to my dad about this.”

I nod. “Go ahead.”

“Just… don’t leave, okay? If there really is a dragon, you can’t be by yourself. I will protect you, Henley. No matter what. I’m not going to leave your side.”

Yesterday was a bad idea. I should have known.

Parker, with the two boys at his side, walks off to talk to his dad.

I watch as they walk off, but my view is blocked when Will steps in front of me. I start to smile at him until I see his pinched lips, then my smile turns more into a grimace.

“Hey, Will.” I look up at him, trying not to be too put off by his bad attitude. If he was in a good mood, then I should be worried.

“Hey?” He scoffs at me. “How many times do I have to tell you before you’ll get it through your skull?”

“What are you talking about?” I ask.

“I heard what Parker just said—about him not leaving your side.” Will rolls his eyes dramatically. “And don’t think I didn’t notice you showed up four hours before the bonfire even began.”

I put a hand to the base of my throat. “How long have you been here?”

“I was here earlier, dropping off some stuff for Mrs. T,” he says. “I just don’t understand you. I’ve tried to warn you. You and Parker are not going to be a thing. It’s simply not going to happen, no matter how desperately you want it to.”

I shake my head, wanting to deny it. But how can I? He’s seen us together. We might be able to hide it from others, but Will knows Parker very well. And, as much as I hate to admit it, he knows me too.

“Will—”

He cuts me off. “Save it.”

Before I can say anything else to him, he turns and marches off, heading down a path in the woods. Part of me wants to go after him, but I promised Parker I wouldn’t leave. Parker thinks it’s unsafe because a dragon is hanging around pack land, but I know better.

“Hey, Vixen.”

I turn to see Blaine. “Hey.”

He nods off toward where Will is walking away. “Is he okay?”

“He’s mad at me.” I worry my bottom lip between my teeth.

“Isn’t he always?” Blaine teases.

I nod, unable to laugh at his joke.

No matter how much I hate to admit it, I want Will to like me. The fact that he doesn’t bothers me more than it should. But IneedParker’s friends to like me.

“Do you want to go talk to him?” Blaine asks.

I nod. “But I promised Parker I would stay here. A couple of boys said there was a dragon spotted around pack lands.”

Blaine’s eyes widen. “Wow. A dragon shifter? That’s cool.”

“Aren’t dragon shifters dangerous?”

He shakes his head. “No more dangerous than a wolf shifter.” He pauses. “Okay, maybe alittlemore dangerous than a wolf shifter—it’s the whole fire breathing thing that makes them scary. But they’re a lot like wolf shifters. Dragon shifters don’t hurt people.”

Fire breathing?
