He nodded. “Nice to see you.”

“And who is this?” She turned the full force of those silver eyes to Roxie. “I’m Olivia O’Connell.”

“Roxanne.” She scooted in, then held out her hand so they could shake. “Nice to meet you, Mrs. O’Connell.”

She said, “Olivia is fine, as I’ve told these boys.”

Bob grinned at her. “I’m not discouraging respect.”

“Me either,” Roxie said. “Kids these days seem like they need extra.”

Peter gaped, then he shoved playfully at her shoulder.

She grinned. The front doors of the restaurant opened, and Liam strode in, followed by Blake and Jasper, who headed for the same high top table they’d been at before. Their table?

Liam spotted her.

She smiled, lifting two fingers as he headed for her like he didn’t notice anyone else in the room.

Then he blinked. “Mom?”

“Right.” Olivia tore the paper off her straw. “I guess it was inevitable.”

Liam stood at the end of the table. “You’re here.”

“So I am.”

“To talk about the case you’re having Vanguard investigate?” Liam stared down at her, all that intensity present, but he seemed to hold himself back.

“What I do with my time and my money is my business, son.”

His mouth shifted.

“But I’m sure Bob would be happy to fill you in with the progress they’ve made today.”

Liam glanced around. “The old woman? I thought a couple of cops stopped you guys from talking to her.”

Roxie said, “They tried, but she shut them down pretty quick. She doesn’t know where her son is, though.” She dug out her phone and found a picture of the guy they’d been trying to talk to. The financial manager that did the books for the Hurstwhile Center. “This guy.”

Liam frowned. “For the veteran’s death? This guy is an accountant for the Obolensky family. A Russian mafia family.”

“Do you know where he is?” It was worth her asking.

Liam said, “I could probably find someone who knows where he is. But I’m also supposed to stay clear of the Russians for a while. Without a warrant.”

Olivia smiled. “My son. Kicking butt and taking names.”

Simon and Peter burst out laughing in tandem.

Roxie grinned.

Liam stared at her, an odd look on his face. “Have dinner with me over there.” He pointed to a table in the corner, secluded from everyone else. “We can compare notes.”

“This is a company dinner.”

Bob said, “It isn’t now.” He waved for Olivia to move. “Get gone, girlie.”

“I need to talk to Destiny, and we’re supposed to go over the case.” Roxie yelped. Liam’s mom had her arm and started to drag her out of the booth.
