Peter looked for a second. “Clear.”

She rolled, got her head under Liam’s arms, and stood with his weight on her. Teeth gritted. More than one person ran toward them to help her.

“Inside.” That sounded like Clare, or maybe the woman Roxie had met at their morning meeting. Some federal agent and her husband, who was also a federal agent.

The doors slid open. Roxie’s legs shook. “The couch.” She wouldn’t make it much farther without dumping Liam and herself on the floor, and she wanted to look at the wound. They flipped him to the couch, and she crouched. “Get me gauze!”

Maybe they had quick clot also. She tore open Liam’s shirt and probed the wound. Concerned voices came from behind her.

“I can call the doctor. See how far away he is.”

“Or an ambulance.”

Roxie tuned them out as she leaned down and pushed Liam’s hip up to peer on the other side. No entry or exit. “It’s not bad. It’s a graze.”

She had to check for a wound anywhere else, or a head injury. She felt his skull with both hands, and the back of his head felt wet. Her fingertips bloody.

She said, “An ambulance would be good. He might have a concussion.”

Liam’s eyes flew open, and he grabbed her elbows.

“Whoa. Easy.”

He blinked at her.

“Just me.”

He sucked in a breath. “The Hummer?”

“Took off. You came to the right place since it seems Vanguard just saved your butt.” She grinned.

“My hero.” He grinned back, his eyes a little glassy.

“You hit your head. Nonsense is understandable.”

He lay back and groaned.

“We’re getting an ambulance.”

He shook his head and didn’t manage to hide a wince. “Ice pack.”

“And that quick clotting stuff.” Someone handed Roxie the medical bag. “Let’s see here.” She cracked an ice pack so it started cooling down and gave it to him. He held it to the back of his head and sat up.

Groaned.

“Go slow. And no standing for a while.” She reached for his graze with a bandage covered in powder that would stop the steady leak.

“Did you rip my shirt?”

Someone behind her snickered.

“I like this shirt!” He gaped at her.

“I’ll get you a new one.”

He made a face an awful lot like a little kid pout.

She pressed the gauze to his graze and pushed hard, holding it in place per the instructions. He hissed, and she said, “Sorry.”
