“He found out.” She groaned, not turning those swollen eyes to look at him. One barely opened. “He found out.”

“What did he find out, Karina?”

She blew out another breath.

Liam holstered his weapon, lifted her into his arms, and stood up. “Let’s get you some help.”

Her fingers curled into the top collar of his vest. “Lee?”

“Yeah, honey. It’s me.” He’d been watching out for her since he arrested her brother years ago and realized the two girls needed far better care than their brother had been giving them. He’d kept tabs. Made sure the foster care homes they ended up in treated them well. “Everything’s going to be fine.”

“He took her. Raphi.” Karina let out a breath that tickled his neck. “He took your friend.”

What had Karina been thinking, staying here? After Raphi had her kidnapped from her house, practically scaring the life out of her, she made some kind of deal? Tried to use her femininity to keep herself safe? He needed to sit her down and get her to talk so he could find out, but that would have to come after tonight was over.

He carried her downstairs where Gage and Blake stood in the foyer. “Anything?” There were still spots upstairs to search if they were going to finish this.

Gage frowned. “Get her outside. The firefighters can treat her while an ambulance gets here.”

Liam took Karina outside.

The firefighter met him on the lawn. “This is the woman you were looking for?”

“No, but she needs your help.” Liam pressed his lips together.

“We’ve got her.” He called for an ambulance on his radio.

Liam needed to get on the search. There were now three women from his life missing.

Karina grabbed his hand. Liam had to lean down to listen to her. “He’s at Hurst—” Her body jerked, and she started to cough. Blood wet her lips. “Raphi.”

“Does he have Roxie and the others?”

Her grip on his hand started to ease off. She was going to pass out. “He has everything.”

THIRTY-SIX

One guy opened the door at the end of the long hallway by touching a key card to a square black panel on the wall beside the handle. A green light blinked on. He pushed down the handle, and Roxie got a look into the room.Finally.

Olivia and Destiny sat on the floor inside the empty room.

The man at the door held a gun where they could see it while the one behind her jabbed the nose of a pistol into her back. If only she could grab it with her hands, which they’d secured behind her with plastic ties.

Roxie clenched her back teeth and breathed slowly. All the air had to enter her body through her nostrils since they’d placed a thick piece of tape over her mouth. Wide as her eyes, most likely. She probably looked terrified, which would play in her favor if she worked it right.

She whimpered. That was good, it sounded really scared.

Sure, she might be outnumbered, but life constantly lay on a blade edge from death. The tipping point was what counted, and all she had to do was push it in her favor.

The man at the door snickered. These guys were the cops who had shown up at the accountant’s mom’s house. Dirty cops.

They’d trussed her up and brought her to Hurstwhile before she could step one foot inside the house. Right after that SUV exploded and killed everyone inside.

Tears slid down her cheeks.

The guy at the door touched her hip. He’d touched more than that when he rid her of her weapons, close up in the back seat of the car. She’d managed to give him that bruise on his cheek with her knee, but there was little satisfaction in it.

She felt a hand on her behind and heard him say, “I get what he sees in you. He’s got decent taste.”
