“Don’t mention it; just never fucking do that again,” I say, then rub my jaw. “Someone needed to snap you out of your pity party.”

He nods vehemently. “You’re right; you’re fucking right about everything. I spent the last two days getting blood drunk on humans to fill whatever hole Katherine left when I should have been thinking of ways to win her trust back.”

I get up and stretch, feeling like fucking death again. “Why does it take me explaining it for you to see this?”

“Because you’re my fucking voice of reason?”

“Christ,” I roll my eyes. “Kat is hurting right now, Gabe, and so are you. Give it a few weeks, but look for her in the meantime. Then think up ways to win her back, ways that do not involve slipping a ring on her finger to make her forget about your lies.”

He glares at me when I say this, but by the guilt in his eyes, I know that it’s true.

“Why do you have to be my fucking voice of reason?” he grumbles before standing up. Then he walks over to me and embraces me. “Thank you, brother; I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“Die, that’s what,” I jest, slapping his back and listening to him chuckle. “Now, if you want to make it up to me, show me to that cunt.”

He places his hands on my shoulders and nods. “This way.”

AUTUMN

They used to call us The Asa; medical women trained in human sciences as well as supernatural medicines and healing. We don’t have any magical powers, we’re simply humans trained and used by creatures who use our mortality against us.

I used to hate it, but my seeing the women in my family heal so many, made me grow to love it. Now it’s my greatest passion and I get the rewards ten times over. Well… except for this afternoon when I was face to face with something that made my heart beat a little too fast for my liking.

I try to focus on the paperwork in front of me, but my mind is not cooperating. Instead, all I can see are those seductive green eyes belonging to the definitely off-limits vampire, Valentine.

When I found him that morning, I had decided to leave for work a little earlier - not something that I usually do. But the second I saw him, my instincts kicked in and I dragged the heavy, muscle-bound man into my tiny Mini Cooper.

The rest is history, I guess, and now he won’t leave my gosh darn thoughts!

“It’s 9 pm, Doc; you should head home,” Carla, my assistant, calls from the door. She’s an adorable little thing, fresh out of college and looking to earn some money before going off to get her nursing degree. Bless her.

I look up and smile. “I just have a few things to finish off before I head out, but you’re welcome to leave, sugar.” I cringe at the use of my Southern endearments, but it only gets a smile out of her.

“Ah, I love it when you call me that! It’s so you!” she gushes while adjusting her handbag. “Goodnight, doc. See you in the morning!”

“Goodnight…” I called, but I doubt she heard me.

I can’t speak like that. I can’t allow myself to fall back into my old accent, especially when I’m about to leave for home.

But today… being around such a handsome man made me flustered as heck and when I get flustered, my accent peeks through.

“Deep breaths, Auddy. Everything is fine,” I remind myself when I close my laptop and inhale deeply.

It’s late; I need to get home and forget about everything that happened today. Besides, there’s no way someone like Valentine will ever remember someone as insignificant as me, even if he made a large impression on me.

After I lock up the clinic, I rummage around in my handbag while walking towards my car at the back. I warn myself not to do this every darn day, but I still do and end up walking into someone - and today is no different.

The chest I bump into feels like solid rock and when I nearly keel over backward, an arm gets slipped around my waist and I slam right into that chest.

“Gotcha,” came the silky purr of Valentine. He’s wearing a wide grin on his face and those green eyes sparkle as if they were gemstones. I should be used to the color since it’s similar to my own, but there’s just something about his eyes….

“Oh! Uhm… thank you,” I stutter and try to wiggle out of his hold, but he doesn’t budge. Instead, his smile falters a bit, and his bows crinkle into a small frown.

His eyes narrow, as if he doesn’t believe me. “Are you okay? You seem distracted,” he comments, looking into my eyes as if he’ll find the answer there. Little does he know that he’s the reason I’m feeling so scattered.

Being this close to him, like earlier today, I get the faint smell of sandalwood and very expensive cologne. I wouldn’t put it past Valentine to wear expensive cologne, seeing as he’s hundreds of years old.

“It’s been a busy day,” I say as he slowly lets go of me and I straighten my coat. “Just… a bad day. What are you doing back here?”
