I frown, not quite understanding. “A doctor?”

Gabriel leads me back to the edge of the pool and we join Church and Xenia again. “She’s of Asa blood, a medical woman who knows about the supernatural and treats them as well as humans.”

“So a witch?” Xenia asks and Gabriel shakes his head.

“No, they’re humans and don’t dabble in witchcraft. They were a tribe of women called The Asa and passed down their knowledge to all the women in their family afterward.” Gabriel explains. “They’ve just been taught how to handle and heal both human and supernatural creatures. She saved Valentine’s life that morning, he would have died in the sunlight had she not decided to leave for work early.”

This woman sounds like she’d be quite useful in her line of work. “So they’ve Entwined, right? Have you turned her?” I ask him.

“No, Valentine hasn’t asked me and I’m assuming they haven’t taken that step yet,” he says, sighing. “Speaking of which, I think it’s about time we all head home, don’t you?”

Xenia stretches and lays back on the pavers. “I think so. This vampire thing will take some getting used to now that I’m no longer a hunter.” She says, then frowns. “What would be my line of work now, anyway?”

They have always trained us to hunt and kill; there was no room for anything else. Marriage and children were optional, and love was not allowed. Hunt until you die and seek no gain from it - it was our lives up until a few months ago.

I’m sure my father mentally kicked himself for sending me here, thinking I would kill Gabriel, only for us to end up like this.

“You could train our new Prospects on how to protect themselves and keep them in line? Become my Enforcer, so to speak,” Gabriel says with a grin spreading across his face. “I think that would be a perfect position for you.”

Church chuckles darkly and nods, agreeing with Gabriel. “What do you say, Hellcat? You already have a road name, anyway,” he urges her, but I can tell he doesn’t need to because that look in her eyes tells me that she loves it already.

Gabe stands up and pulls me to my feet. “Let’s get some rest before we leave tomorrow. Church, can I leave the job of disposing of that dead fucker on Katherine’s bedroom floor to you?”

“Consider it done, Pres,” Church says, then wraps his arms around Xenia and kisses the side of her head. It’s like Gabriel and I have melted into the background already, so we leave them be in their little bubble and make our way inside.

We reach Gabriel’s room just as the sunlight peeks over the sand dunes, and it’s not lost on me how often I used to kill vampires by making them face the sun. Had I known that there was a way to tell whether vampires were guilty, I would never have done it.

Then again, my father had warped my mind so much, I don’t think I would have cared either way.

Gabriel walks up behind me and slips his arms around my waist. “Something on your mind?” he asks, resting his head against the side of mine.

“A few things,” I sigh, “just wondering what comes next for all of us. I’m pregnant. You’re the literal Vampire King now and not to mention a DA back in DC. Where do we head from here? What’s in store for Devil’s Void?”

He chuckles. “Devil’s Void; ah I fucking miss my club and everyone in it. There was the option to move back here and start over, but I’ll need to keep my public appearance back in DC. If I want to rule, I’ll need the right contacts and there’s no better place than the nation’s Capitol?”

“That’s a good way of thinking. Does this mean I’ll have to start dressing appropriately, like Amara?” I tease and giggle at the way his chest rumbles with a growl.

“Fuck no, I won’t have you parading around like a so-called perfect doll. You can do whatever you want, little lamb, as long as you stay by my side,” he says, kissing my neck.

What do I want to do after this? After not being a hunter anymore and knowing I have killed so many and ripped away people from their families? What do I do with this knowledge?

Something then occurs to me; a literal lightbulb moment. “I have something in mind, but I’ll speak with you once I have everything figured out,” I say as a smile crosses my face at the prospect of doing something good. Of giving something back.

“I’ll always be here and will support you with whatever you decide,” he says with a light smile crossing his lips as he continues to hold me.

Las Vegas will always be like home to me now; I found a purpose in my life here, a meaning instilled in me. But for what I have in mind, we will need to go back to DC, as Gabriel said. Hopefully, this idea will help, hopefully, I am not too late.

We touch down in DC the next evening and Valentine greets us on the tarmac with a wide smile on his face.

My eyes grow wide when I see him; I didn’t expect the Bond to have changed him so much! The happiness radiates off of him in waves, and the smile he offers is contagious and I cannot help but return it.

“Kitty Kat!” He exclaims when he sees me and when he embraces me, he does a Church and spins me around. “It’s so good to have you back.”

I giggle and embrace him with the same vigor as he greeted me. “It’s good to be back,” I whisper, then sigh and break off the embrace to look into his eyes. “Gabe told me everything; about my mother and your Chosen. I just want you to know that I am happy for you and that you do not need to feel guilty about anything at all.”

His mouth goes slack and his eyes slightly widen. “Kat, you don’t have to—”
