I breathe out a sigh and start pulling out the arrows in his back. If these are left in, it can poison a vamp from the inside, and they’ll die slowly. So I have to be careful not to leave splinters.

Then I remove his leather jacket, rip off his shirt and look at all the bullets that the hunters pumped into him.

Cringing, I get up and rummage through his drawers until I find a dagger and start digging out the array of bullets lining his back. I only stop once I see the holes on his back start to heal, then I turn him over, and a cold sweat covers my body.

I can see three bullets wedged close to his heart.

“Fuck,” I say, knowing this must have been Xenia’s doing since she always aims for the heart.

With trembling fingers and a mind made up, I pull out the arrows and dig out the bullets once more before focusing on the three close to his heart. I don’t know how I’m going to do this, but I have to try.

“What the fuck are you doing?!” Valentine rushes in the door with Church in tow, but I don’t feel scared of either of them for some reason.

Church’s crimson eyes are filled to the brim with anger, but then he sees the dagger in my hand and the splinters of wood next to me…and frowns.

I peer up at them, covered in blood, and gesture to Gabriel.

“I pulled out all the bullets and arrows, but three are lodged close to his heart. I need to dig them out before they poison him any further. Can you find me some tweezers?” I say in a calm voice that surprises even me, and Valentine’s crimson eyes shift to green.

He blinks and mutters, “I’ll get some,” before walking out of the room and returning with a pair, then I lean back over Gabriel and get to work.

The disbelief coming from these two is palpable, but I ignore them because one wrong move and their Pres is as good as dead. It takes me an hour to successfully dig them out, and when I am done, I sit back and crack my neck.

“I should have been a fucking doctor,” I say, then get to my feet and turn my attention to the two scary vamps who look shocked as shit. “Can you two carry him over to the bed?”

Valentine nods, then he picks Gabriel up with Church’s help and lays him on his bed. I walk into the bathroom to wash my hands and grab a cold face cloth, but for some unknown reason, I decide to stick the tweezers in my mouth.

“Ah, fuck!” I call out, and the two run inside just as I spit out Gabriel’s blood. “So gross.”

“What’s the matter?” Valentine calls as I wash my hands; however, something causes me to stop and close the taps.

I look at my hands and frown, then I look up at the two standing in the bathroom doorway and hold up my left hand.

“Are you guys seeing this, or am I going crazy after that surgery?” I ask, looking at the weirdest thing on my smallest finger.

Valentine’s eyes narrow at my hand, then he looks at Church before anchoring his gaze to me.

“What are you seeing?” he asks, and for some reason, I think he sees it too. Whatever the fuck this is.

“A thin red string on my pinky finger? It sounds fucking crazy, I know… I might just be strung out, but it leads….” I trail off, walking past them and looking at where this stupid imaginary string leads.

Fuck, perhaps I am going crazy. I do feel exhausted as fuck, but the moment my gaze lands on Gabriel, all the exhaustion fades away.

Did he always look so fucking gorgeous, or is that just the adrenaline speaking right now? Maybe, I feel more wired than when I stayed up for three nights straight.

Someone grabs me by my shoulders and pulls me back; when I look up, it’s straight into Valentine’s wild, crazy eyes. “Does that string lead to Gabriel?”

I nod. “Yeah, but I think it’s just my exhaustion speaking,” I chuckle and rub my eyes. “I could use some –”

“Did you ingest his blood?” Valentine cuts me off with a high-pitched voice, and I shrug.

“Yeah, I accidentally put the tweezers in my mouth without thinking. Can I go now? I’m passing out here,” I say, feeling light on my feet. But Valentine’s following words knock the wind out of my sails, and I realize then that I am in so much more trouble than I initially thought.

“Katherine, you’re not fucking tired, and you need to listen to me right now,” he sighs and grips my shoulders. That string you’re seeing is called a Red Thread of Fate, which means you’re Gabriel’s Fated. But you have to promise me right now that you will not mention it to him. Promise me right fucking now, Katherine or both of you will die.”

KATHERINE

“Please tell me you put something in my food this morning,” I whisper. “Please tell me you’re not being fucking serious….”
