He trails off and pales, then cocks his head towards Gabriel’s bedroom.

“Your test starts now; he’s awake,” he says, then opens the door and drags me inside. I’m about to ask what he means by that when my gaze falls on Gabriel groaning while sitting up in bed, and I get it.

I fucking get it and hated every second of it.

The man looked even more delicious than the last time I saw him, even while half out of it and covered in his own blood. I didn’t notice before, but he’s cut his long hair; it’s longer on top and shaved away on the sides. And that damn beard is still trimmed to perfection.

Where I used to feel mildly attracted to him, now it felt amplified; I’m pretty sure if he asked me to crawl towards him, I would happily act like a fucking dog.

What is this bullshit?

Church is trying his hardest not to chuckle, shakes his head, and nudges me as if to tell me to act normal while Valentine rolls his eyes.

“Ah, fuck,” Gabriel grumbles, hanging his head in his hands. “What the hell happened?”

Valentine walks towards him, and so does Church, while I’m left standing there, not knowing what I’m supposed to do next.

Every inch of me wants to go to him to see if he’s alright, but I’m reining that wild pony in with all my strength.

“You got shot up quite badly; I’m pretty sure you would have died if Kitty Kat over here didn’t save you,” Church says before Valentine could mention anything, and I see the glare in his eyes while Church winks.

Gabriel’s head shoots up, and his gaze immediately lands on me, frowning. Then he looks down at his chest and at the discarded baobab bullets and arrows before looking back up at me.

“You saved my life?”

“She sure did!” Church says with a grin, and Valentine gets up to pull him out of the room with a “we’ll check the perimeter then come back” before closing the door behind him.

Gabriel blinks and shakes his head at his two men, then stands up but staggers backward. That stupid feeling inside of me takes over, and I rush to him, holding him, so he doesn’t fall.

I can feel his eyes boring into my head, and when I look up into his eyes, they’re that clear blue that makes him seem human - clear blue and confused as fuck.

“Careful, you took quite a bit of the bullets and arrows….” I trail off and ease him back onto the bed. “They soak the bullets in the juice of the baobab fruit, so you’ll be out of commission for…a…while….”

I can barely string together a coherent sentence and know I am babbling, but how can I concentrate when he’s looking at me as if his life depended on my gaze? Why is he looking at me like this, and why do I like it?!

“You saved my life?” he repeats.

“You saved mine,” I say with a shrug and feeling acutely aware of his arm around my waist. “But, you need to take it easy, at least for tonight.”

He chuckles, a deep sound that reverberates through me then he shakes his head. “I can’t take it easy after what happened tonight; we got them all, except Xenia, and I have a feeling this was just the first wave.” He says, then slowly rises to his feet again, but I push him back onto the bed.

“I swear to fucking God, if you don’t lay your ass back down, I’ll stick those arrows back inside of you,” I say but feel a twinge in my heart just uttering that threat.

Gabriel’s eyes nearly bulge out of his sockets before he bursts out laughing.

“Careful, little lamb, you might make me think that you care,” he says before trying to get to his feet again, but I shoot him a look, and he sits back down.

“Are you my nurse now?” he teases, then pulls me on top of him, where I land with a squeak. “I can get you an outfit to go with it if you’d like.”

I push at his chest, but even after taking fifteen arrows and four clips of bullets, he’s still stronger than I am.

“Ugh, you wish. I’ll be your warden until you’re fine to resume your vampy duties, but in return, I’d like to have my freedom to walk around the place.”

That grin on his face sends me throbbing, and a cold sweat drips down my back. That naughty look in those blue eyes is doing something to my heart, and I fear I might just die of heart palpitations at this rate.

How am I going to hide my attraction towards him or knowledge of this stupid thread on my left finger?

“Hmmm,” he squeezes my ass, and it feels heavenly. “Are you sure you want to walk around a vampire nest? Most of my men want to kill you.”
