My family exterminated his and I can’t begin to make it up to him.

Making certain that he was in his vampiric slumber, I slipped out of his hold, grabbed my t-shirt from the floor, and bolted to my own room. I couldn’t even look back at him, because I knew that if I did, then I would have begged him to take me with him to DC.

So here I am, standing with my back against my bedroom door and trying not to sob.

“You shouldn’t have done it, Kat,” Xenia’s choice of words makes me scoff and I shake my head sadly.

“Tell me something I don’t know,” I say, walking over to the window just as dawn peeks over the skyline. My last night with Gabriel will forever stay with me; there’s no going back for me from here even if I take that potion.

Xenia sighs, walks to where I’m standing, and puts her head on my chin. “So, vamp sex, huh?”

I chuckle and shrug her off. “If I ever have to fuck another guy, he’ll pale in comparison to what Gabriel made me feel,” I say, and she lets out a low whistle. “You should probably go and hide before Valentine comes; he’s bringing the stuff.”

She’s been hiding out here for close to a month now with nothing but a ticking pocket watch close to her ribs to hide her heartbeat and vanilla perfume to mask her scent. I thought she was crazy when she said she would use these, but it seems like it worked.

After kissing the side of my head and sighing, she goes back into her hiding spot just as Valentine knocks on the bedroom door. He takes one look at me and shakes his head.

“You two will be the death of one another,” he grumbles with a look of disappointment in his eyes, then holds up his hand. “I have what you asked for.”

My heart drops when he says this and a part of me wants to tell him I don’t need it anymore. But I don’t, instead, I take the vials he holds out to me, and a shiver runs up my spine. It feels so wrong just to hold it in my hand, how the hell am I going to feel once I take it?

“How will I know it’s working?” I ask, tearing my eyes away from the vial and looking up at him.

“There will be pain; an excruciating amount of pain, and it will feel like every nerve ending is on fire. This is due to you severing a Goddess-Fated bond, something a higher power planned and put into motion even before you were born. After the pain, there will be peace… and then anger.”

My breath hitches slightly, knowing that this will cause me more pain than anything else, but I know that it’s something that needs to be done. Not only for me, but I’ve come to realize that it’s wrong for me to be with Gabriel knowing what my family did to his. It would be unfair for him to find happiness with the enemy.

I take a deep breath. “Okay. So how do I take it? The red one first, then the blue?”

Valentine chuckles and crosses his arms. “No; the blue one is for you while the red one is for your little rabbit friend hiding in your closet,” he says, cocking his head towards the walk-in. “You can come out, Xenia.”

My eyes nearly pop out of my head, and I cough nervously. “W-what? You knew—”

“Of course, I knew,” he rolls his eyes. “I’ve been around for centuries, Kitty Kat; besides, the little pocket watch trick was something I taught Giselle.”

Xenia slinks out of the walk-in with a pale face and fear in her eyes as she walks around Valentine and comes to a stop behind me.

“Why didn’t you mention anything?” I ask.

He smirks. “Because it was fun watching you two act like you were fooling me and don’t tell me you didn’t notice the increase in the portions of food I made for you?”

This is too much for me to handle right now. Not only was Valentine aware of Xenia being here, but he kept it a secret from Gabriel and Church and continued to feed the both of us without their knowledge.

“Why lie to them?” I asked with narrowed eyes, and a sliver of suspicion settles in my heart. “What do you have to gain from both Church and Gabriel losing their Fated?”

“Is that any of your business?” he answers, raising his eyebrow at me. “I could always take it back?”

“No!” Xenia cries out and takes the vials from me. “No, we’re good, right?” she nods her head at me.

I sigh, not sure that I like this, but I return the gesture anyway and take the red vial back from her. “So, how does this work? Do we just drink them?”

“Yes, but make sure you’re close to one another when you do. The pain will be similar to heroin withdrawals and the only relief will be to go to your Fated; this is where the other party comes in.” He says, pointing at Xenia. “They’re to lock you up for three days so the Bond severs without interruption or intervention.”

Xenia and I look at one another. “Okay, we can do that,” she says, then frowns. “But why are they different in color if they're the same thing?”

Valentine grins and shakes his head. “They’re not the same thing; they’re made with different ingredients. You see, Kitty Kat ingested Gabriel’s blood and can see the Red Thread, knowing she’s his Fated. While the one you have is because Church ingested your blood and knows you’re his Fated. Basically a flip of the potion.”

Ah. Okay, that makes sense.
