“Let’s just say I found Xenia and gave them a little push,” he says, then lowers his gaze when we see a limo approach the mansion. “They’re here.”

By ‘they’, he means the two council members who have come to welcome me into my new role.

White hair so translucent, permanent crimson eyes, tall and lithe, Kazimir and Eirisse Vasile are twin Pureblood members of the council and four hundred years older than me. They could kill me in a heartbeat and not blink an eye, that’s how powerful they are.

Valentine and I go out to meet them and I catch the sliver of lust in Eirisse’s eyes when her crimson gaze falls on Valentine. This is the woman who killed her Fated and severed a holy bond, so the fact that she’s staring at him as if she wants to devour him does not sit well with me.

“Gabriel, welcome to your new home,” Kazimir says and shakes my hand while Eirisse kisses both my cheeks.

“Happy to finally be here,” I say, giving them what I think is a pleasant smile even though the lie tastes like curdled milk on my tongue. “This is Valentine, he will be joining me here in a few months' time.”

The twins exchange handshakes with Valentine, then Kazimir grins. “Cezar Valentin?”

Valentine’s eyes widen when his given name is said out loud and I can smell the anxiety slip into his scent. No one should know who Valentine truly is, much less that he’s with me as my most trusted.

“You know my name,” he says.

Kazimir shrugs. “I have heard of the exploits of a human who obliterated and consumed nearly twenty villages before suddenly stopping and disappearing,” he says, then turns to me. “Only to find him at the side of our new King. What happened to you?”

“Gabriel saved me,” Valentine answers without a beat.

Eirisse tuts and crosses her arms. “Pity; a man full of bloodlust would be right up my alley,” she says, winking at Valentine, who visibly cringes.

“Now, sister, we haven’t come here for your next meal. We’re here to welcome Gabriel to his new home and role, not to mention introducing him to his new bride.”

Just as Kazimir says this, the door to the limo opens, and out steps a beautiful blonde woman with an air of sophistication around her. She’s wearing an elegant ivory suit cinched perfectly into her curves, black heels and walks as if she’s on a runway.

Amara Hess - my new Fae wife.

Valentine’s eyes bulge out of his head when he sees her, then he looks at me with confusion etched all over his face. I shake my head and whisper that we’ll talk about it later, having forgotten that I didn’t mention this to him… or the fact that I need to find my Fated.

Fuck.

“Everything you requested in a wife, including the fact that she’s not only a lawyer but also submissive and speaks when spoken to. I trust you’ll be happy with what we’ve brought you,” Kazimir says, takes Amara’s hand, and kisses the back of it.

“She’s exquisite,” I say and repeat Kazimir’s action, noticing how Amara’s eyes shine when I compliment her.

She truly is beautiful and will match the role I need to play for now until I eventually find my Fated; then the council will have to end her life. It’s a pity, but that’s the way it has to be. She’ll be good enough for public appearances and give off the impression of a happy marriage between us.

“Wonderful! I will let the Elders know,” Kazimir says, clapping his hands together and then nodding to both Valentine and me. “For now, we’re off. Enjoy your new home, Gabriel; I trust you’ll be happy with everything.”

“Thank you, both of you. Send my regards to the council,” I say, shaking both of their hands and watching as they walk off.

I feel Valentine seething next to me, knowing that I’m in for an earful as soon as Amara is out of earshot. Sighing, I take her hand in mine. “Let me show you to our bedroom,” I say, not meeting Valentine’s eye.

She remains quiet while we walk. Another thing I requested was that she be quiet, but now the silence is getting to me. It feels like forever when we finally reach what would be our shared bedroom and walk her inside.

“All your clothing has been brought over and has been packed into our shared walk-in,” I say, gesturing to the large walk-in closet to the right.

She nods, fidgeting with her handbag and looking at the enormous bed in the middle of the room. “Sleeping arrangements?”

“We’ll sleep in the same bed, but do not expect anything intimate from me. We’re only a married couple for public appearances, nothing else.” I explain with my voice devoid of emotion.

The last thing I want is to get close to another woman and be intimate only for it to mean nothing to her; I won’t make that mistake again.

“Yes, sir,” she bows her head. “I will get into something more comfortable so we can have dinner together.”

“No need, I’ve eaten, but you’re more than welcome to have dinner by yourself,” I say, then turn around and walk out of the room, noting her dejected expression. I don’t have time to play nice, so Amara better get used to my bluntness.
