I can feel Valentine’s fury as soon as I approach the balcony again and when he sees me, I hold up a hand. “Don’t get your fucking panties in a twist, it’s only for public appearances,” I say, and he shakes his head.

“When the fuck were you going to tell me about this?!” he exclaims, shaking his head.

“It slipped my mind okay,”

He scoffs. “Slipped your mind, my fucking ass. And is there a reason you requested a woman who is the complete opposite of Kitty Kat?” he asks with a raised eyebrow.

The question causes me to blanch; I didn’t even notice that Amara was the complete opposite of Katherine. Blonde hair, green eyes, sinfully curvaceous, a Fae, docile and submissive - holy fucking shit, he’s right.

I wave my hand as if to brush him off. “Bullshit. Besides, it’s only until I find my Fated.”

There it is; I have detonated a bomb.

“WHAT?!” he roars. “What the fuck do you mean until you’ve found your Fated?! I thought you didn’t want yours!”

I cross my arms and pinch the bridge of my nose. “Calm the fuck down, I forgot to mention it to you. It’s another one of the council’s conditions; I need to produce an heir within the next ten years or they will strip the title from me.”

Whatever reaction I expected Valentine to have did not come close to him lunging at me and tackling me to the ground.

I’m so fucking taken aback at his reaction that it takes me a few seconds to click that he is really trying to beat the shit out of me.

I have him pinned, chest against the wall, within a few seconds. “What the fuck, Valentine!”

“WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?! WHY!”

I sigh. “I fucking forgot, okay—”

“FORGOT! You fucking forgot and made me do the unspeakable, Gabe!”

I let go of him and take a step back as trepidation sets in my heart, only to see crimson tears streaking down his face. He shakes his head and growls in frustration.

“Remember how you made me promise to kill you if you found your Fated?”

I nod, not liking where this is going. “Yeah?”

He laughs sadly. “The Maker’s Will is absolute, Gabe; I would have killed you if you found out she was your Fated. I unconsciously hid baobab stakes all over the mansion and my body would have moved on its own because you made me promise!”

I move without thinking and pin him against the wall with my hand at his throat, squeezing hard. “What the fuck are you saying?”

He shakes his head and continues to sob. “You made me promise… you made me promise, and I didn’t want to kill you! So when she ingested your blood by accident after the hunters attacked the estate and saw the Thread, I…”

Growling, I slam him hard against the wall. “WHAT DID YOU DO?!”

“I gave her the Unbinding Potion,” he says wistfully, sinks to the floor when I let him go and hangs his head in his hands. I take a few steps back from the man I trusted with my life, knowing that he’s done something while thinking it’s best for me.

He found my Fated and made the decision to sever the bond by himself so he wouldn’t have to kill me. He did this all for me… because of a stupid fucking promise I forced him to make while I was angry.

The Maker’s Will is absolute, the Maker’s Vow even more so.

“Who?” I ask and his head snaps up, the hurt in his eyes palpable at what he has done. “Who was it?”

She cleaned my wounds the night the hunters attacked. She had my blood on her hands and she somehow ended up ingesting a drop of it.

The pull I felt towards her, the look in her eyes when we were in the shower together, her tears, the miserable, faraway look in her eyes…Her questions about my Fated and sharing my blood with another.

Now my Fated might be lost forever…

I already know the name he’s going to say, and when he does, my undead heart shatters into a million fucking little pieces.
