KATHERINE

Iwalk downstairs the following evening and see a flash of blonde hair and a tight red dress whipping past me. She stops in her tracks when she sees me and I can literally see the blood draining from her face.

How can anyone be this beautiful without even trying? I feel like a trash goblin next to this flawless woman.

“You’re Gabriel’s Fated,” she says, all perfect poise and not a hair out of place.

“And you’re his fake wife. Nice to finally meet you, I’m Katherine.”

Oh my God, why am I sounding so petty? This woman has the ability to turn me into a raging jealousy-fuelled piece of shit and all she has to do is breathe.

Her lips are a thin line and she nods. “Amara,” she says and is about to turn around when I call out to her, feeling like a massive asshole for being rude for no reason.

“Wait, sorry, I didn’t mean for that to come out as harsh as it did,” I say, walking the last few steps down and coming to a stop in front of her. “Newborn emotions and pregnancy hormones.”

She coughs and her eyes widen. “Pregnancy?! Oh wow!” she says, a hand fluttering to her chest. “Congratulations?”

“Why does that sound like a question?” I chuckle. “And thank you, it’s definitely unexpected. Well, for me anyway.”

Nodding, she plasters on a fake smile and I see a flash of hurt in her eyes. “A child is a gift either way, unexpected or not,” she says with a racing heartbeat. She fiddles with the strap of her handbag while not meeting my gaze at all.

I narrow my eyes at her reaction, not sure if she’s being sarcastic or otherwise, but something tells me there’s no sarcasm in her tone. “Do you have children?”

Her heart literally skips a beat when I ask this, and she takes a step back, shaking her head. “N-no, I don’t. I’m sorry, I have to go—”

Before she can run away, I’m in front of her and dragging her into what seems to be the living room. Horror fills her eyes as they shift to purple and I see her palms glowing with the same color before I take a step back from her.

She was about to fucking slap me.

I watch as she rubs her arm and I immediately feel like shit. “Sorry, I still don’t know my own strength yet,” I say, holding up my hand and she shoots me a glare.

She scoffs, looking as if she wants to kill me. “What the fuck, Katherine?”

I place a finger to my lips and breathe out a sigh. “I want you to tell me what happened.”

Her brows pinch together in an uncomfortable, confused frown.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Can I go now? I have an evening scheduled with the mayor.”

This woman thinks she can bullshit a hunter. Ah, ex-hunter. There's something up with little Amara, something she's not telling anyone and I'm surprised that no one has picked it up yet.

Looking at her properly now, I can pick up on her uneven heartbeat and the bead of sweat forming on her hairline. She's nervous, and I'm about to find out why.

“I saw the look in your eyes when I mentioned children, Amara. Where are they and why would you choose to become Gabriel’s wife, knowing what would eventually happen to you?”

Something in what I’ve just said causes her to snap and her entire body emits that same purple glow.

“You think I wanted to be ripped away from my family and forced to become the bride of a Vampire King? You think I signed up to have my daughter taken away, just so she can be bred as a sacrifice as well?!” she cries out, her nails extending along with her teeth as she advances on me.

Oh, fuck - Fae Fury.

“Amara—”

“No! You wanted the truth, you wanted me to tell you what happened, so here it is,” she starts, actually starting to scare the shit out of me. “Gabriel requested a wife with my qualities and since my family is indebted to the vampire council, they sold me! I was the perfect wife he needed, so here I am!”

The turmoil in her scent is a dead giveaway that she’s not bullshitting me right now and I have a proper look at her for the first time since we met. Her facade is dropping and I can see the tortured soul beneath her perfect veneer.

Her heartbeat picks up and tears well up in her eyes; that perfect woman I was so jealous of seems to only be an act and now I finally understand why. Well, partially.
