She rolls her eyes. "I already told you, yes."

"I'm just making sure."

"Thank you for that," she says with a hint of exasperation.

My hand twitches, wanting to reach out to her, but I restrain myself. Instead, I slowly back away toward the front door.

"Bye," she throws me a tiny wave.

Turning reluctantly, I throw the front door open before I decide I'm not leaving her. I walk directly towards my truck and hop into the driver's seat, where Ronan is waiting patiently for me in the passenger seat.

"She's got you by the balls," Ronan grins, revealing a wide grid of teeth.

I choose to ignore his jibe, though my gaze keeps flicking toward the rear-view mirror, my inner struggle to resist the urge to run back inside to Sutton.

Ronan doesn't stop needling me, clearly relishing every second of the recent developments in my life. "I never thought I'd see the day."

I retort, defending my actions. "You're the one who pressured me into it!"

"It was a much-needed push, and I'm glad I did it. You've been a grumpy fucker for far too long."

"My whole life?"

"Exactly!"

Three hours of Ronan's incessant chatter, and I finally pull into his driveway to drop him off at his place.

His hand pauses on the door handle as he glances over his shoulder at me. "I'm coming over later."

Trying to maintain a semblance of distance, I respond, "I'll see you tomorrow."

"No, I want to spend the night with you!"

"We live together. Don't you think we could use time apart?"

Frown lines crease his mouth. "Take it back."

"I need alone time."

He gives me a pointed side-eye. "Are you messing with me right now?"

"No. Go spend time with your family."

"I will, and then I'll spend time with you."

"Okay, fine, whatever. I don't know why I even argue. You're going to do what you want anyway."

"See you later!"

"Way, way, way later." The door opens and slams shut before he can hear the end of my sentence.

What a little shit.

I start the ten-minute drive to my house, anticipation building as I think about seeing my family for the first time in a couple of months.
