“How long has he been standing there for?” She asks Bridget without turning to face me.

Bridget shrugs and looks down at her open textbook.

“Long enough,” I answer.

“I tried to warn you,” Bridget sings without looking up.

Lenny still hasn’t turned around. Bridget slams her book shut, clears her dish, and puts it in the dishwasher.

I wait, but Lenny still hasn’t moved.

Bridget walks up to pass me and taps my chest with her palm.

“She needs to take a few breaths to relax first. Should just be a few seconds.” She looks at Lenny and then back to me. “Maybe longer.”

She looks over at Lenny and nods before leaving.

“Ok, I’m off to class. Bye!” Bridget calls out and slams the door.

I wait a few seconds, but Lenny hasn’t moved yet.

“Lenny, are you ok?” I ask, carefully taking a step into the kitchen.

“Yup.” She takes another deep breath and lets it out with another loud hum.

She turns slowly, staring at the floor.

“I babble when I’m anxious or nervous.” She admits to the floor.

I nod, but she can’t see me. Walking closer I lift her chin for her to look at me.

“I know. You’ve done it before.” I tell her remembering the time we went to the golf range.

“Right.” She nods.

She’s still avoiding making any eye contact with me.

Is her babbling insane? Just a little.

Am I scared? Not really.

Was she fucking adorable while doing it? Hell yes.

“Cora is harmless,” I assure her.

“Cora is going to kick my ass.” She snaps, finally looking up at me.

“She’s all talk. I’m not the only guy that’s been with her this semester. It’s not like she has a claim to me or that we were anything more than a couple of one-night stand’s.” I don’t know what I’m doing, but I can’t let Lenny think Cora means anything to me.

I want Lenny. Plain and simple.

She’s back to not looking at me. I’m losing her, and it’s like a stab in my gut.

What is wrong with me?

“Hey.” I force her to face me, but her eyes refuse to meet mine.God, she’s so stubborn!“What else can I say? I won’t let Cora hurt you or say anything to you. I haven’t been with her in weeks. She’s never been in my room. I’ve never slept in her bed. There’s no other girl. It’s just you, Lenny.”

Her eyes snap up, finally meeting mine.
