“What?”Did I hear him right?“Why did you order mine?” I’m fishing in my bag for cash, but come up empty.

We have a dining card for meals, but if he already ordered for me that means it’s already on his card.

“Well, if you didn’t show, I was going to come find you with a delicious gyro in hand. Don’t worry I got it.” He notices I don’t have any cash to pay him back with. “I figured, you wouldn’t run away if I was offering you food.”

“But you don’t know what I order.” I accuse him.

“Chicken gyro, no onions, extra tzatziki sauce on the side. Oh, and green tea.” He holds up the bottle of iced green tea I always get.

The guy hands the order to Nick. He orders a fork and knife as I stand there, completely stunned.

Am I that predictable? I guess I do order the same thing each time, but I didn’t think he’d notice something like that.

Coming out of my stupor I lean forward to order myself a set of utensils.

“Can I—?”

Nick stops me and hands me the set he already ordered.

“These are for you. I don’t use them. Remember?” He’s struggling to hide his smirk as I take the utensils from him.

“Thank you,” I mumble.

Nick leads us to a small table by the window and waits until I sit down to hand over my dinner.

“I was actually just going to grab my food and go. I have lots of studying to catch up on, plus an article—” I try to excuse myself but I’m cut off again.

“Bullshit,” Nick interjects. “You can sit and eat with me. We’re friends, right?”

He flashes me his panty dropping smirk, and I don’t move. Frozen in place, not able to move away to continue my plan of complete avoidance. It isn’t going to work, not this time. I get up and start to leave, but Nick stops me.

“Come on Lenny. You dressed up today hoping to run into me, and I bought you dinner. The least you could do is stay and eat with me. We can talk about anything you like. No flirting.” He holds my arm back and the smirk is gone. In its place is a vulnerable look I’ve never seen on him before.

His lips are pressed tightly together, trying to hide it, but his eyes are begging me to sit.

When Nick Miller buys you dinner and begs you to sit and eat. You sit and eat.

I look down at my skinny jeans and off-the-shoulder sweater. Not quite dressing up, but it is far from my usual leggings and sweatshirt I wear.

“Maybe I have somewhere to be.” I try to be slick.

I don’t. It’s Wednesday and I thought there was a chance I’d run into him at least for a minute. So, sue me, I wanted to look good.

“What? You got a hot date or something?” Nick asks with his mouth full.

“Maybe. What if I have a date?” I ask innocently.

Nick swallows his food and takes a huge gulp before answering.

That vulnerability returns again, he’s not hiding it as well this time. It came out really fast but disappeared just as quickly when he picked up his water bottle.

I settle in and unwrap my gyro to eat. I might as well since he did pay for it.

“Who’s the guy?” Nick clears his throat before taking another huge bite of his food.

“No one. I don’t have a date.” I can’t lie not when he’s looking at me like that.

He’d find out anyway. Bridget told me she sits next to him in class and Layla tells Greg everything and Greg tells Nick. There’s no use lying to him. I wouldn’t want to.
