Lenny:It's ok. We were tired anyway, long day.

Me:I wish you stayed.

No answer.

Me:I’m sorry if I made things awkward in front of your brother. He’s a good kid.

Lenny:You didn’t, my friends did. I’m sorry if he was making you feel awkward. I saw some of the looks he was giving you. Layla and Bridget told him, and seeing you with Kandi wasn’t great.

Kandi. That must be the redhead she saw me with.

Me:That girl grabbed me right before you walked in. I was actually searching for you when she did.

Lenny:We’re just friends, Nick. Let’s leave it at that. I have to get some sleep, Goodnight.

Fuck!

I don’t want to leave it at that. I don’t want to be just friends.

I hate myself for pushing her away. I want so much more.

It’s something I’ve never felt before.

I need her.

But I’m going to be the best damn friend she has until she can feel it too.

Chapter 27

Lenny

The next day, I walked Alex around the rest of campus that we didn’t get to see yet, taking him through the empty halls and classrooms.

It’s a Saturday, and there’s just a few classes going on. Most students are sleeping off hangovers, working, or training.

“Where’s the gym you work at?” Alex asks after we tour the training facilities.

I really regret telling him about the gym. It’s the last place I want to go on my day off. I try to double back, anything to stay away from there.

Nick will be there.

He’s always there on Saturdays unless the team is away.

“Len, we've been this way twice now. Are you avoiding taking me there? Is it even real?” Alex is getting annoyed with every avoidance I make.

“Yes, it’s real! It’s just going to be crowded right now. We can walk by but not in.” I give in to him.

I take him to the parking lot, but don’t dare get close enough for anyone to see me. “See, here it is.”

Alex laughs.

“We can’t go by the windows?” I shake my head no. “Fine, I’m going.” Alex takes off before I can stop him, and peers inside.

Looking around, I don’t see Nick’s car, but he usually runs here.

Satisfied with what he sees, Alex comes running back to my side. “It’s a nice gym, I see why they prefer it. I also see why you don’t want to go too close. If you’re just friends, why are you avoiding him?”

I roll my eyes and head back to the ASA house. I’m not getting into this with Alex. He’s seen enough, the tour is over.
