“Lenny, you shouldn’t get involved with him.” Alex brings Nick up again as he easily keeps up with my quickened pace. “He was fucking with another girl last night! I wanted to kick his ass.”

I stop him in our tracks.

If Alex gets into Drexton, he’s going to be playing hockey with Nick as his captain. He shouldn’t be getting upset with him. They need to get along.

The urge to defend him and whatever relationship we have is strong, but in the back of my head I’m thinking exactly what Alex is saying. It’s exactly what it looked like when we came walking in. But oddly, I trust him. I trust that Nick is telling me the truth. He hasn’t lied to me yet.

“You don’t get it. Girls like that throw themselves at the players, literally jumping on them without any warning. If he was interested in that girl he would’ve been with her.” Alex rolls his eyes at me. “Look, he told me she grabbed him while he was looking for us. He avoids those girls as much as he can, and I believe him. I really believe it.”

I find Alex’s eyes to check that he understands it’s the truth. I believe it, and that’s all that matters. And Alex needs to trust me and Nick.

“I’m avoiding him, because…” Shit, I don’t know why I’m avoiding him. “hockey is his first love. It comes first over all else. It always will. School comes first for me. It’s easy to forget that. Get it?”

I’m not here to get distracted and get my heart broken. Neither is Nick. That’s why I’m putting a stop to this.

I’m falling for him.

And he’s going to break my heart.

“Yeah ok.” Alex nods. “So, what? Are you in love with him or something?”

I laugh. Inlovewith Nick?

No. Not a chance.

That’s a bit extreme.

“In his dreams.” I scoff, lightening up the mood. “Let’s go get lunch.”

The rest of the day is fun and light hearted.

Bridget drives us into town to show Alex some local spots. And now, we’re heading to the skate arena for the free skate night.

“Confession, I’ve never skated before, well actually I was nine. Does that count?” Bridget admits while lacing up her ice skates.

“You’ll be fine.” I encourage her, but really, I can’t wait to watch her fall on her ass.

Especially after outing my relationship with Nick last night. She had no right to do that. I don’t care how obvious it was.

Greg and Layla are already on the Ice taking a slow lap. Alex and I join in while Bridget holds the wall for dear life. We tried to help her and at least she’s moving, but she’s too stubborn to hold our hands.

Two laps around and then I see him. It’s like I’m drawn to his presence. I can’t help but notice when he walks into a room. My eyes immediately find him in any crowd.

An involuntary groan escapes my throat.

Alex laughs when he sees Nick stepping onto the ice and waiting for us to come around to him. Unless you’re in the middle, it’s courtesy to stay in one direction while going around. So, he just stands there waiting for us.

“I’m going to help Bridget.” Alex skates away from me, fist bumping Nick on his way.

At least our talk went well. Alex isn’t trying to fight Nick or keep him away from me. That’s the best I could ask for. I just don’t want any bad vibes between them. For Alex’s sake.

I slow to a stop in front of him.

“Why are you here?” I sneer, trying to not sound like he’s the bane of my existence. He is.

And why does he have to look so good?

His hat is turned backwards, making him look young and carefree, with his hair sticking out the one side. I’m starting to love that look on him.
