“Ugh!” I groan and turn to face the window with my hood up. “I can’t think with these assholes around me. Let’s start over. What are you up to today?”

She sighs.

“I’m headed to work now. After that I don’t have plans.” She sighs again. “I’ll probably end up studying or writing.”

“Would you like to hang out?”Shit. As I say it I get a punch in the arm and a hard slap on the top of my head.

“Like how?” She asks but doesn’t wait for me to answer. She gets right down to it. “I don’t know if it’s a great idea. I know Layla’s probably going to be with Greg all night, but my room’s not a hotel for you.”

“Whoa. I wasn’t even thinking that.” I really wasn’t.

“It’s just, being with you is toxic to my brain. I get that I called you and tried having phone sex, but I was drunk. It was bad and wrong, and I really can’t do this whole fuck buddy thing. I thought we could be friends, but I get it now. You’re right, we can’t be just friends.” She’s on a roll again. “I’m trying not to say it, but I know I did say it and I know you heard me. I’m really starting to like you, like really falling head over heels. I’m sleeping with your fucking jacket! That’s just insane.”

“I think it’s cute,” I say, stopping her.

“Whatever you say, but friends don’t do that. Fuck buddies don’t do that.” I can just imagine her pacing and throwing her hands up.

Her craziness is fucking adorable.

“Lenny, will you go on a date with me later?” The bus starts moving and I’m running out of time.

“What?” She asks in disbelief.

“I want more. Lenny, just say yes. Go on a real date with me? Dress nice, we’ll have dinner, in a nice restaurant. Tonight, after we get back. I’ll figure out the details and send it to you.”Just say yes. Please say yes.

“Ok, yeah” she says and I don’t know if she’s still unsure or if she just doesn’t believe this is happening. “Yes,” she says again, sounding positive this time.

“I have to go, but I’ll let you know what time I’ll pick you up.” Relief and happiness run through me.

I have a date with Lenny Briggs.

“Ok,” she says.

“Alright, I’ll see you later.” I hang up before she can change her mind.

Greg shakes my arm with excitement and Holt shouts “Yes!” with a fist bump to the air.

The entire bus cheers.

If I fuck this up I’ll never hear the end of it.

Chapter 33

Lenny

Nick Miller just asked me out on a date, a real date.

When Nick Miller asks you on a date.Wow.You say yes.

My heart is still racing after I enter the gym. Layla is already there helping a customer. She took an earlier shift so she could get home and get ready before Greg gets back.

Now I’m kicking myself in the ass that I didn’t do the same.

How was I supposed to know Nick was going to ask me out?

“Layla, I need your help.” I go straight to her, ignoring the confused look on her face and the customer standing behind her.

I still have my bag and jacket on and she’s still giving a tour to a potential new customer.
