“Later. When you’re done.” I walk back to the locker room.

A few minutes later while I’m about to head back out to start my shift, Layla comes barreling in.

“What happened? What’s wrong?” She grabs my arms.

“Nick asked me out on a date. Like a real date. Tonight.” My body trembles when I say the words out loud.

“Ok, and did you say yes?” Layla’s looking at me like I have two heads.

“Yes! That’s why I need your help! What do I wear? Should I wear makeup? I’m not really sure how to put on makeup. This is too much.” My anxiety is on high alert.

This is too much. What am I supposed to do?

What should I say?

What do we talk about?

“Deep breaths. Breathe.” Layla holds my shoulders to calm me and then grins once I’m relaxed. “You got this. I’ll come over after you get out of work, and help. You have time. Focus on work.”

I nod, because she’s right I still have to work for five hours.

“Lenny, Nick already likes you, the real you.” She waves her hand over me. “You could wear this and he’d still pop his load.”

I laugh.

I want so much to do this right, but we’ve already hooked up and hung out. He’s already seen me as a complete mess.

This is nothing.

It’s almost five. The end of my shift and I still haven’t heard from Nick.

My gut is in knots.

What if he changed his mind?

What if something happened to them?

I’m walking back home contemplating if I should tell Layla to forget it when my phone vibrates with a new text.

Nick:7:30. I forgot to text you earlier. Wow, I’m sorry. Greg is pissed at me. Did I screw this up already?

Me:I’m just heading home now, you didn’t screw anything up. 7:30 is good.

I’m giddy and smiling as I practically skip home. I don’t even know where he’s taking me, but it’s actually happening. I pinch myself and re-read his text several times. It’s real.

“You should have said, ‘can’t wait!’ Or ‘I’m so excited!’” Bridget says reading my text to Nick while Layla does my makeup.

“It’s fine!” Layla says while telling me not to move. “She can tell him when he gets here how excited she is.”

She winks at me and lifts the eyeliner to my eyes.

“Aw, I’m really excited for this. Can I take pictures of you two like you’re going to prom?” Bridget coos and snaps a picture of me and Layla getting ready.

“No pictures!” I snap at Bridget.

My head turns and Layla’s eye pencil goes right into my eye.

“Ow!” I scream.
