“I don’t really want to go,” I grumble, picking up dirty towels around the indoor pool at the gym.

At least I don’t have to be out front or near the floor of the gym today, but Jerrick has us on dirty towel duty. He’s just sour because neither one of us will cover a shift tonight.

I am in no shape to work a double. Layla is too excited about this party. Even if I don’t go, there’s no way she’s missing it.

“What? You have to go!” Layla gasps as if I murdered someone. “We can’t get in without you! I don’t even know anyone else going besides Bridget, and we don’t even get along. She’s very snobby towards me. You can’t not go!”

Bridget doesn’t like Layla because she feels like Layla was trying to take her best friend away last year. It was pure jealousy and I tried to explain to Bridget that I’m friends with both of them, but I see Layla more.

Layla and I were roommates and co-workers last semester and now we’re just co-workers. Even though I live with Bridget now, I still see Layla more often because we have a couple of classes together. Whereas, I only see Bridget at home.

Bridget’s schedule is so intense this year, she’s rarely home.

It’s not at all my fault. And not Layla’s either. Bridget is still my best friend. No matter what.

Plus, Bridget is known to be a bit snobby until you get to know her.

“Oh, that’s just Bridget being Bridget! She loves you!” I assure Layla waving it off.

I’ve been trying to get them to be friends for like a year now. It isn’t working.

“Yeah ok. I’m still not letting you bail on us.” Layla says matter-of-factly as if it’s non-negotiable.

Bridget said the same thing when I mentioned being too tired this morning before I left for work. They’re more alike than they realize.

“Fine. I’ll go.” I relent. “But I probably won’t stay the whole night, so try to get along with Bridget so both of you can stay out longer.”

“Or do you mean that you won’t last long before you’re whisked away to Nick Miller’s cozy bed?” Layla sighs, dreamily.

I throw a towel at her.

“Ew. This one smells nasty.” She throws it in the hamper. “Should we all dress up tonight?”

“No. I will be wearing jeans and a tee shirt. I don’t care. I’m not wearing a dress!” I put my foot down.

Nope. End of story.

If I’m going, I’m going comfortable.

Chapter 6

Lenny

I’m wearing a skirt.

Layla came over early. She and Bridget raided my closet and both decided I should wear my black skirt with my denim jacket after I refused to wear the low-cut tank top they picked out without something covering it.

I’m just happy they’re getting along, so I can’t say no.

I drew a line at the very revealing tank top I didn’t even know I had in my closet.

“I look like I’m trying too hard,” I argue when they insist I wear heels.

I take them off and put on my yellow Keds instead.

Layla sighs, disappointed at my lack of fashion and girlie qualities.

“At least you let me do your makeup! So, I won’t push you too hard.” She relents, looking me up and down.
