Layla comes in a couple of hours after me, and I’m sitting at the front desk reading when she nudges the back of my chair.

The front desk is boring. We sit there greeting anyone that comes in, but it gets really slow. Especially early on a Sunday morning when most students are nursing their hangovers.

“So, how was last night after we left?” Layla gets herself ready for me to start gushing, but to her dismay, I brush it off like it was nothing.

“I didn’t do anything after you left. When did you leave?” I ignore her questioning gaze to help someone scan their gym card. “Bridget said you saw me go into Nick’s room. I had beer all down my shirt. I went up to use his bathroom.”

Layla grins at me and shakes her head slowly.

“Lenny! Don’t lie. I saw you!” She throws her head back, laughing. “Greg tried to take me up to his room and we walked in on you riding Nick’s D.”

Oh. My. God.

I stare at her in horror.

“Oh please, it’s not the worst either one of us has seen being roommates last year.” She shrugs.

There were way too many times we’ve both accidentally walked in on each other. Me walking in way more on her with Dale than any other time. We never quite figured out a system.

But still. How did I not know they walked in on us?

Her and Greg?

Meaning Greg Hurst, first-line defenseman, saw me riding his friend like I was a goddamn cowgirl.

“I had no idea.” I try to think over every second of the night.

Layla is trying but failing at not laughing at me.

“You really didn’t see? Nick saw us. He threw something at Greg.” She tilts her head watching as it all clicked together.

How did I not know?

The noise I heard and Nick leaning forward, readjusting himself. He threw something across the room.

“I can’t believe he didn’t say anything,” I mutter to myself.

“Wow. He had you keep going like a champ.” Layla pats my shoulder. “We also waited for you guys to come down, but you never did.”

She shrugs like it’s no big deal.

It is a big deal.

My face is getting hot just thinking about it. I can feel it turning red with embarrassment knowing they walked in on us like that.

And he didn’t say anything!

“I’m actually glad you didn’t.” Layla continues getting all dreamy-eyed. “We wound up talking the rest of the night. He’s such a sweet guy. I really like him.”

I snap out of it.

I can’t worry about what happened last night. What’s done is done. And it’ll never happen again. Water under the bridge.

“That’s good!” I turn my attention to her. “Do you like him more than Dale?”

“Dale who?” She laughs.

Another customer comes up and swipes in breaking up our conversation, but I’m not in the clear yet. We still have hours of work together. I know she’s itching to ask me more questions.
