“It hasn’t.” His curt response tells me he doesn’t want to talk about it, but fuck that.

She is the first female and the first student to get the job. I watched their last practice and I’m amazed at how well she whips these guys into shape.

Carter is not getting out of this.

“I had the pleasure of watching her work through some blue line progressions with you. Those drills were impressive to watch.” His glare turns harder as he chews on his lip. “What different techniques do you work on?”

Carter looks off to the side and comes back to me with a slow smirk. “I didn’t realize this interview was about the coaching staff.”

“It’s about the team,” I shrug, “and how you guys got to the championship.”

“Yeah,” he shrugs back at me. “She kicks my ass. Is that what you’re looking for? She’s hard on every one of us. Pushing us to our limit because she knows we can take it and we needed it to get our drive back.”

“Sounds like she’s a great asset to the team—“

“She’s an amazing asset.” Carter cuts me off. “She’s smart and knows her shit about the game. She’s fucking brilliant. A hard ass when she needs to be, but kind when we’ve had too much. She’s funny and bea…” he clears his throat to stop his own tirade of thoughts. “She lost her shot, but we needed her to get ours. They’d be fools to let her go.”

“Hopefully, she’ll stick around.” I move on, realizing I may have touched on a personal subject I wasn’t planning to expose. “Do you think you guys have a shot at winning the qualifier tomorrow?”

“I think it’s going to be a tough and close game to call.” He goes back to his script.

“What’s next for Carter Pierce?” I ask and watch his brows furrow. “Are you planning on entering the draft this year or has a team been in contact to pick you up?”

He doesn’t answer and his knuckles turn white in his clenched fists.

“You don’t have to answer—”

“That’s none of your fucking business.” He snaps and pushes the mic from his face. “Are we done here?”

Carter stands without waiting for my response. He throws his headphones down and walks toward the door.

I’m not sure what I said to set him off that time, but when I watch him leave, I see Drexton Hall’s newest defensive skills coach through the glass door looking down the hall. Watching Carter leave.
