We’re on a stealth operation, appearing like a few normal guys enjoying a regular beer on any other normal night. I am all for this. It’s exciting and dangerous and I’m trying not to get caught, but we’re famous in this town. We’re bigger than the pro athletes to everyone here. I get asked for an autograph at least once a week. Back home I'm a nobody, but here? I’m a god.The King.

Normally, that’s all fine, but we stick out like a sore thumb and as soon as the girls grab a booth, I see the moment Hannah recognizes us. She tilts her head in wonder and points right at us while her mouth moves, saying something I can’t read.

Kandace’s head whips around to look at us.

Her face turns bright red and the smile she had when talking to Hannah quickly fades to a scowl. And it’s all directed at me.

She gets up, sauntering over to our table with the composed sway of her hips. Deliberate and controlled as she makes her way through the small crowd.

“Incoming,” Finn warns us and quickly looks away from her.

“What are you doing here?” She stands at my side, tapping her long nail on the table, but I barely give her a glance.

I’m still angry with her. That’s not right. I’m not angry, I’m disappointed. I’m so disappointed that she couldn’t give me anything after everything we shared. She still sees me as nothing more than another easy lay. We agreed to be casual. I can’t be mad, but I’m rightfully disappointed that she’s still guarding herself and not letting herself feel anything.

“Me? I’m having a drink with the guys. What are you doing here?” I play innocent and turn my head to look down at her.

Big mistake.

Kandace is always gorgeous, but tonight she’s pulling out all the stops.

That dress is showing off every gorgeous curve of her body. Her makeup is done in a way that makes the green in her eyes pop even more than they normally do. And I can’t stop my hand from reaching out to touch her hip.

She pushes it off when I barely brush down her velvet dress.

“You’re spying on me!” She accuses me with her hand firmly placed on her lustrous hip.

“No, I’m not.” I laugh it off.

“I know you guys come here sometimes, but I don’t think Country night is your jam,” she challenges me and crosses her arms under her full breasts.

I look around and sure enough, people are dressed in big hats and flannels. Country music is blaring, and I think they’re setting up for some line dancing in the middle of the floor where the pool table usually sits.

“I’m not spying on you.” I defend myself again, because it’s true. We’re not spying on Kandi. We’re here to protect Hannah.

“Fine. Whatever.” She rolls her eyes with a wave of her hand. “Then, leave.”

“Can’t do that,” Gentry chimes in.

“Why not?” She looks at him, but he takes a long sip of his beer to not answer. She eyes Finn next, who shakes his head and looks down. And then back at me.

“We won’t interfere with your girls' night, but if you need us, we’ll be here.” I shrug.

“We won’t need you,” she sighs and rubs her temple. “This is exactly the thing I don’t want to deal with—”

“Whoa.” I stop her from saying anything more. “We’re not here for you. I’m not here foryou. It’s not always about you, Kandi.”

I tighten my fingers around my glass to stop myself from trying to touch her again.

“Then who are you…?” She trails off and looks at Hannah, then back at us. “Oh my god. He told you to spy on her?”

“No,” I say carefully. I’m defending my actions, but I can’t give up my brother. “He asked us to make sure nothing happens to her.”

“Let me see that.” She grabs my phone from the table before I can stop her.

I don’t know how she knows my password, but it opens right up for her. I try to take it back, but she pulls it away. Her scowl deepens as she reads the texts, and then she takes a picture of herself with her middle finger up at the screen to send off to Holt.

“You guys are pieces of shit for going along with this.” She points to each one of us.
