“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make sure your wife is safe,” I defend him and ourselves. “Ignore us. He gave us very explicit instructions not to bother you. We won’t interfere unless absolutely necessary.”

“Yeah, right. You’re loving this.” She scoffs. “You’re loving that you get to watch me and stop any guys from coming over to us.”

“Don’t flatter yourself,” I snap with a sneer. “We’re just a casual fling, right?” She glares right back at me. “I'm here to protect Hannah. Do whateveryouwant.”

I dare her. I dare her to flirt with some random asshole to take home. Try as she might, none of these guys have anything on me. I’m on her mind. I’m under her skin. And I’m getting into that heart she keeps locked up tight. I’m slowly breaking down those walls, one brick at a time.

“Fine.” She gives me a fake smile. About as fake as her hatred toward me. “We came here to dance and have a good time. Don’t come over to us.” She leans in really close to me. “Don’t stop me this time.”

She’s not going to do anything. She can threaten all she likes, but I know she won’t be able to go through with it.

I’m between her sheets, and in every fiber of her being. She hasn’t even tried to hook up with a random guy since we started this thing.

Whether or not she wants to admit it, she’s mine.

Chapter 27

Kandace

O’Halloran’s Pub isn’t big enough for the two of us. At least, that’s what they say in those old western movies, but I get it now.

No matter where I go, I feel him watching me.

“We can leave if you want to,” Hannah offers, noticing my discomfort.

This entire time, we talked about Luca. I told her everything. From the beginning to how we ended off last night.

“We can't let them win,” I say and glance back at them. The three of them are pretending nothing is happening. Like they aren’t stalking us.

“Honestly, I like that Holt sent them here for us.” Hannah shrugs. “I get upset when he’s away, but this is his way of showing he cares.”

My friend is delusional, but she’s in love. That’s what love does to everyone.

“I guess I can see it that way,” I grumble and admit defeat for Hannah’s sake. It’s bullshit that he doesn’t trust us. I’d never let anything happen to Hannah. “But did he have to send Luca?”

Hannah tries not to laugh. “I also like the idea of you two together.”

“We’re not an item, Hannah. Don’t get your hopes up,” I warn her to keep those romantic ideals to herself. Hannah was always a romantic at heart. Always looking for her soulmate and one true love. “It’s just sex.”

“Good sex,” Hannah says with a raise of her glass.

“Great fucking sex,” I groan, hating that I told her exactly how great it is. Hating myself for admitting it even more now. “He lets me do things I’ve only ever fantasized about trying.” I breathe out a heavy sigh, thinking about last night.

The thought alone has me shivering and clenching my thighs together.

“And why not give him a chance?” She shyly tiptoes around the subject. “From what you told me, he sounds sincere.”

“It’s my senior year,” I state the obvious reasons. “I’m graduating next semester. I’m not sticking around to be with him. Long distance never works for an extended period of time. And I don’t have any plans of following him around the country once he goes pro. San Jose drafted him, but who knows how long he’ll be there.” I throw my hands up to emphasize my point. “I have dreams, Hannah. They don’t include being a wife of a hockey player. I worked too hard, and I’d be stupid to give up my goals.”

“Do you think I’m stupid?”

Shit.I didn’t mean it like that, but I know that hurt Hannah’s feelings. She gave up going to school to be with Holt and have a family. Her life completely changed, and she gave away any aspirations she had to make it happen.

Then again, Hannah never told me what her plan was after graduating. She never expressed a career choice or any options she was considering.

“That’s not what I meant.” I reach out to hold her hand on the table and reassure her I don’t think that way. The thought never even crossed my mind that she made the wrong decision. “We have different dreams. You know that better than anyone that you’re living yours. That life just isn’t for me. But we’re still soulmates.”

She smiles and lifts her head. “Of course we are. No man can come between that, not even Holt. No matter how much I love him.”
