“Nonsense,” she waved her hand at him. “You willalwaysbe my boy.”

He stared out toward the palace. He heard such sincerity in her voice. It was sweet, he thought. He felt a hot stinging feeling prick the corners of his eyes. Alzerion stood up. Turning, slowly, as he caught sight of a couple. They strolled down the road, arm-in-arm. He bit down on his lip.

Then he looked back at his mother. “Of course, at some point I’ll get married. I do want a family. I’m just not at that point, yet.”

“Fine, I can understand and respect that. Just remember you’re not going to get any younger. Don’t wait too long.”

“I know,” he said voice low. He cleared his throat as he gazed back at the palace.

"Is it time?” Her head tilted to the side.

He smirked as he stepped forward and hugged her. “Unfortunately.” He pulled back and waved. Melinda nodded and then he left.

As he trudged back to the palace his mind felt jumbled. Finally, he strolled to Gorgeous Garden. He wandered soaking in the beauty of the flowers. A sweet scent tickled his nose.Ah, he thought, roses. Flashes of moments from when he was younger. Playing with Aironell in the garden. He rubbed his hands down his face. He sat envisioning better days. He gazed up at the sky. He closed his eyes, tight. How he wished he could get back some of that fun or maybe just maybe, he could have some brighter days ahead.

A TRUTH REVEALED

T

he day was going to be great. How could it be anything less? Aironell knew that it would be another fun-filled day with her best friend. It was summer.Flowers carpeting the ground, she thought. The water from the pool that sparkled in the sunlight and birds chirping. She threw the blankets to the side and ran to the window.

There, she was able to see the golden rays of the sun shining down, casting a glittery scene. A sweet smile spread over her lips as she smelled the scent of the roses. She never quite understood why but that was her favorite. There was just something about them. They made her feel comforted. She inhaled the sweet scent and then rummaged through her closet to pick out her outfit. She held different clothes up, weighing her options. Finally, she was satisfied with a black romper that had red roses all over the material. She pinched some of the fabric around her stomach.Ugh too loose. She picked up a dark gray belt and placed it around her waist. Then she put on a nice pair of black flats.

She looked into her floor-length mirror and moved side-to-side to decide if this was indeed what she wanted.Maybe just a little cardigan to add a little something, she thought. So, she picked up a gray lace cardigan that came up to her elbows. After she was satisfied, Airon sat at her vanity and brushed her pretty dirty blonde curls.

Her fingers glided across different clips and bows, until she found the perfect one. It was a sparkly gray clip with small gems, and in the middle of the clip was the design of a rose with red gems. Her curls frothed over the clip, and her fair complexion made those dirty blonde curls look just like she was a model.

After she had her hair done, Airon picked up her favorite necklace. The necklace was a gorgeous shade of white gold. It was something she had for years now. She knew the man it came from; however, she had not seen him in many years. She only ever stopped wearing it once. Anger kept her from wearing it, for a time. Alex did not keep his promise; he did not come and visit again. But then she felt terrible for not wearing the gift he gave her, and it had been around her neck every day since then.

The half-heart necklace always made her smile. She vowed that she would never forget Alex. He befriended her, though she was only a child. His kindness was something she wouldn’t forget. With those thoughts, she put the necklace on. Then she stood up, took one more look in the mirror, and ran downstairs. She stood in the hallway near the front door.

“Mother!” yelled Airon. She moved about trying to see where she was. “I’m going outside for a while. Emilia and I want to soak up some sun.”

“I’m in here,” Isabella called back from the living room. Airon followed the cadence of her mother’s voice. She was seated on the couch flipping through the pages of a home magazine.

“Mom, I’m headed out.”

Isabella set down the magazine and looked up. “Oh, Airon, you look so beautiful.” Her face brightened. “You have grown into quite the young lady.” There was a gleam in her eye.

“Thank you.” Airon grinned. She practically glided as she moved toward Isabella and sat beside her. “I owe everything to you and Dad.” Airon leaned in and wrapped her arms around her mother. “You guys are the best parents anyone could ask for.” Airon pulled back and stared back at her mother.

Isabella’s eyes glistened. Airon sensed something. Unsure why but she felt like her mother wanted to say more, but didn’t. Then Isabella’s mouth twisted into a smile.Still, it seemed out of place, Airon thought.

“That means a lot, dear, thank you.” Isabella grabbed Airon’s hand, gave it a gentle kiss, and stood up. While she turned a frown shone on her face.

Airon caught the downcast look. “Mom, are you alright?” Airon wrinkled her nose as she, too, stood.

Isabella rested her hand on Airon’s back. “I’m alright, sweet pea. I just have some things on my mind.”

“Is there anything you want to talk about before I go? I don’t have to leave just yet,” Airon said as she pointed toward the door.

Isabella pressed against Airon’s back propelling her toward the hall and the front door. She pulled Airon in for another hug. “Not right now, dear, maybe later.” Isabella stepped back. “For now, go have fun with Emilia, but be back by six.” Isabella pointed her finger at her. “Your father and I have some things we want to discuss with you.”

“Should I be worried?” Airon tilted her head to the side.

“Of course not,” Isabella laughed. “On the contrary, you should look forward to it.”

“Well, alright, if you say so. Goodbye, I’ll see you later then.” With those words, Airon walked out of the living room and out the front door.
