“What do you mean, no?” Ulbrick’s hoarse voice was more of a yell.

“Ulbrick you disgust me! You are delusional if you ever truly thought I would or could hurt her.” Alzerion swallowed and continued. “I would die before I ever let harm come to her.”

Ulbrick’s eyes were hollow. Like a desolate cold rock. Alzerion gulped. He knew that if Ulbrick could, he would probably melt the flesh off of his face.

Ulbrick inched closer to Alzerion. “I guess I will have to do it myself.” He raised his hand.

Alzerion reached out, grabbed Ulbrick’s hand and twisted it behind his back. “Over my dead body.” Alzerion hissed. Then he shoved him back.

“Such a fool, Alzerion. Such a bitter disappointment to the end.”

“Stop!” Aironell stepped forward.”

“No. Don’t move.” Alzerion held his arm out so she wouldn’t come closer. “This fight is long overdue.”

Ulbrick laughed. “Looks like you still won’t learn.”

“There is not one thing I would want to learn from you!”

Ulbrick glared and then pushed the sapphire on his ring. Alzerion didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. He moved closer to Aironell.

“You should go.” He looked over at her but she shook her head. Then she grabbed his hand. He nodded. He circled around her but still couldn’t see anything.

“Something’s wrong,” Aironell spoke softly.

Alzerion moved a bit ahead of her. But didn’t detect any issues. “Aironell, I don’t—” He stopped himself. He heard a whooshing sound.

“No!” Aironell screamed.

Alzerion turned and saw the arrow coming at him. He didn’t have the time to move. His armor was fractured from fighting. He gulped.

A flash of green light emerged from Aironell’s half-heart necklace. It was so bright Alzerion couldn’t see.Was he dead? When the light faded he realized what happened.

“No, no, no, no!” He was somehow behind her and before he could grab her the arrow pierced her chest.

When he reached her he laid her in his arms. “Please be okay. Please save her.” Alzerion looked up to the sky and then back down. He heard the shouts from the balcony.

Aironell touched her necklace but her hands were shaky. A thin white light wrapped around them. Alzerion tilted his head. He didn’t know what was going on, but he saw people talking but heard nothing. Ulbrick’s mouth twisted into a triumphant smile. Alzerion couldn’t deal with him just now. He lowered his gaze to Aironell.

“What did you do?” Alzerion’s voice cracked. “Why? Why would you do it?” He felt the heat in his eyes.

Aironell’s mouth winced and then formed a small smile. “I would do it again.”

“That was foolish.” He held her hand to his cheek.

“Maybe.” She winced. “I would still make the same choices. Alzerion, I couldn’t let…you die.”

Her breath was becoming ragged.

“I am so sorry for everything.” Alzerion choked on a lump in his throat. “I failed you.”

Aironell placed her hand over his mouth. “No. Never say that. Fate had other plans. You couldn’t save me from this.”

Alzerion shot a death glare at Ulbrick. “I hate him.”

“Don’t let that fill your heart. Alzerion, why…why does he taunt you so?”

He shook his head. “Curious even at the end.”
