Aironell’s lips wavered.

“There is something else, I never told you.” His head bent over her. His expression was pained as he gazed at her. “I believe you know some of it already. My mother wanted better for me so she sent me away, to the king and queen. My father well, he was not very nice.” Alzerion gulped. “Ulbrick…is my father.”

“I…am sorry. It will be better.”

“How are you so …calm?” Alzerion’s head hung low. He pressed his forehead to hers. He let out a whimper.

“Don’t cry.” She swallowed. He felt her soft skin against his cheek. “I’ve accepted my fate. You were right. I am the future of Bachusa.”

“This is all wrong,” Alzerion’s voice wavered.

“It is as it should be.” Aironell reached her shaky hand up. He grabbed it and held onto her. “I did it for you. You are the elusive, one.”

Alzerion’s eyebrows pinched together.

She forced a smile. “I-I… love you.”

His cinnamon-red eyes were like pools. He pulled her closer and pressed his nose against her cheek. She was growing weaker, he could feel it. He wanted to do something, anything, but couldn’t. He didn’t have that kind of power. He felt her hand push, feebly against his chest. He stared into her cerulean-blue eyes.

“Do you love me?” she murmured.

He caught his breath. He felt the wave crash within. How did she not know how he felt?He grabbed a loose strand of her hair and tucked it behind her ear.

Leaning in he said, “I love you with all of my heart. I always have. My love is unyielding. All my deeds, my sacrifices, it was always for you.”

He took a slow breath and cupped his other hand under her chin. He licked his lips and then placed them on hers. He could feel her softness against him. He closed his eyes and let nothing else in. The nice, slow kiss grew deeper. He pressed his lips against hers as she grabbed at his arm and pulled him closer. He felt the connection between the necklaces as sparks glowed bright. Alzerion’s breathing grew faster. He opened his eyes and smiled back at her. Panting. Aironell attempted to return a smile but instead grasped at her wound. “Can I ease your suffering?”

“Please, don’t worry.”

“Aironell, how—”

“Do…you… trust… me?”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“Do you?”

“Normally, yes, I do, but—”

“It’s either yes or no.” Her eyes looked glazed. Like she was fighting to stay with him.

He sighed. “Then yes, I trust you.”

“Good, then don’t worry. You will always be in my heart, and I will always find you.”

He pursed his lips but before he could argue, she pulled him in for one more kiss. It felt bittersweet as he kissed her. He felt the sparks fly and this time he looked up to see them catch on the white light around them. He glanced back down at Aironell but she was fading.

She sparkled in magic light and said, “I love you.” Then she disappeared. The white light that surrounded him was gone, too.

Alzerion looked around as he merely sat there. Nobody else moved a muscle. He forced himself to swallow. No, no, no, no.

He shook his head and muttered, “It wasn’t supposed to end this way.”

He felt this heaviness weigh him down, but he stood anyway. He slowly turned He could see the tear-stained faces on the balcony. He clutched his necklace that lay above his heart. His heart. It was laughable. It would never be the same.

Alzerion turned again and saw Ulbrick. He was smiling. So smug. So arrogant. So foul. He had to do something.

Alzerion bared his teeth, “You will pay.” He felt this cold steely resolve wash over him. It was just the two of them. Alzerion did not see anyone else standing up to fight him. Alzerion ran full force at Ulbrick.
