“Okay, I’ll be in touch with Michael Strong tomorrow. We’ll have to bring him and Carter into our mediation room tomorrow,” she says referring to Carter’s attorney.

“Will Skylar have to be there?” I ask.

“Yes, but it’s better if you’re not,” she says pointedly. “You’ve done a great job, Liam. Exceeded our expectations. We have enough evidence to have Carter suspended from the league,” she says. “Plus, all those other cases he paid off. We’re golden.”

“Okay,” I say. “It wasn’t easy.”

“I’m sorry,” Flynn expresses. “I don’t like playing dirty. I really don’t, but this is my grandson we’re talking about, and . . .” Her voice cracks. The fact she considers Crew a grandson makes my own eyes tear up. I’m grateful it’s dark in the back of the Uber.

“What is it?” I ask.

“She told me what Carter was like,” she says. I know what she’s talking about, and it makes me want to slam my own fist into Carter, but I’ll settle for him never going near my girl and my son ever again. I realize I just thought of Crew as my own. The thought makes my chest expand in a new way.

“I know,” I reply. “That’s why I had to do what I did. The things I said tonight were awful,” I confess. “Like truly horrible.”

“I’m sorry you had to do this. It was a necessary evil. The law wouldn’t have protected them. I’ve seen it too many times with my clients. Last year, one of my clients lost her four-year-old daughter because her unhinged ex was allowed to take her for unsupervised visitation. The guy killed his daughter and then himself.”

“Shit, Flynn,” I say as a cold shiver runs through my body.

“You take care, Liam. If you need anything, call me,” she urges.

“Will do.”

The call ends, and I head back to my hotel room. I notice Dad texted his address. I knew I may have a busted lip or a black eye when I came for this visit, but I’m in a little worse shape than expected.

At night, I can’t sleep. The doctor gave me meds for the pain in my ribs and body, but it’s hard to breathe. At seven, I get a call from Skylar.

“You said you’d call me last night. I didn’t call you because you asked me not to, but you said you would call.” Her voice is panicked.

“I’m sorry, baby, but everything went well,” I assure.

“Flynn called. She asked me to be at her office at ten this morning,” she says warily.

“Sorry, I can’t be there with you. I’m going to go visit my dad this afternoon.”

“Liam,” she gasps. “That’s great news.”

I laugh, but then it hurts, so I cry out, and then I realize what I did.

“Are you okay?” she asks and she sounds suspicious.

“Never been better,” I croak. “Honestly, I’ve. . .” How do I say this?

“What is it?” she asks with concern.

“It’s nothing bad. I promise. It’s just ever since you and Crew came into my life I’ve been seeing things different. The way you love and protect Crew. . . I love him and want to protect him too,” I declare.

“Oh, Liam.” She sighs.

“I love him, Sky, and it got me thinking about my own parents. About my father and what he must have been feeling about what happened with David. I wanted to cut him some slack. I’m going to his house to meet his new family. My half siblings,” I say. “He has two kids.”

“I’m so happy for you,” Skylar says. “That’s good news. It’s good for both of you.”

“Dad seemed excited about me coming by. He offered to cook for me. I don’t remember him ever cooking. Hopefully, he doesn’t poison me,” I snort.

“Very funny. I think it’s great you’re going to see your dad. Maybe you’ll see your mom next,” she suggests.

“You know. . . before you came into my life, I was feeling so lonely. I couldn’t shake it, and now. . .”
