“All set then?” I ask.

“Yup,” she confirms.

She tells her parents and brother she’ll catch them later and she heads outside with me.

She comes to a full stop as I walk up to the ATV I rented.

“Um. . .”

“What?” I ask.

“Is that safe?” she asks, pointing at the ATV like it’s a UFO.

“Yes, because I plan on taking it slow. We are heading out to a pond area at the edge of the property, and I figured you may get tired doing the walk so this baby is getting us there.”

“Okay,” she says hesitantly. I have a picnic basket filled with all the food and drinks we need for the rest of the afternoon. I also have a nice-sized blanket.

I get on and then she gets on after me. I pass her a helmet because safety first. After putting on my own helmet, I follow the directions the lady at the front desk gave me.

A warm breeze brushes over me as we make our way across an open field filled with grape trellises.

“It’s so beautiful,” Patty says.

Skylar and Liam couldn’t have chosen a better place.

We finally make our way to the pond. There is a large patch of green grass, a couple of benches off to the side, and enough trees to provide shade from the heat of the day.

I stop the ATV and offer Patty my hand.

“You really are full of surprises,” she says, grinning wide.

I shrug. “I’ll get us set up.”

I quickly get to work laying out the blanket under a tree and then setting the picnic basket down. The lady even packed me a little folding table that is about half a foot off the ground to set the food on and when I reach into the basket, I see a vase filled with some flowers.

I set it all up.

We take a seat. “You better have some breakfast,” I suggest to Patty. Since she has been pregnant, missing a meal can cause her to not feel well.

I lift the plates out of the basket to feel they are still warm. I set Patty’s in front of her and open the lid. She is met with fluffy pancakes, fresh berry sauce in a closed container, scrambled eggs, bacon, and some toast.

Her eyes widen. “This is perfect.” She looks so excited.

“I’m glad I got it right,” I chuckle.

I pass her utensils and lift my lid. “You got the same meal as me?”

“We’re in the offseason. I get to indulge a little,” I tell her.

We enjoy our breakfast and then I ask her if she wants to take a walk with me.

I take her hand in mine. “This place doesn’t feel real.”

“It really doesn’t,” I agree. “Have I told you lately how happy you’ve made me?”

She watches me carefully. She shakes her head.

“I’m sorry, but I want to make the effort every day to show you how much you mean to me. You’ve brought so much joy to my life. Your family has welcomed me. I’ve never really had that before. It feels good and I’m thankful to you.”
