Her lower lip quivers. “That was really beautiful, Evan.”

We stop walking and my hand comes up and my palm brushes her soft cheek. “I don’t want to make you sad.”

“You’ve made me so happy too. Before we became friends, I wasn’t really living. You got me to see how unsustainable and unhappy my life really was. I know we got pregnant by accident, but I don’t regret this baby for one minute.”

“I don’t regret any part of us either.” My thumb brushes small strokes on her cheek as I look deeply into her baby blues. “I don’t think he/she was a mistake either. That night was meant to produce a life inside you, but it didn’t only produce that. It produced a love that’s knocked me off my feet,” I declare and on cue I drop to one knee.

Patty lets out a soft gasp.

I reach into my pocket and produce the little red velvet box. “Patty, I want this to be forever. You are the most wonderful, caring, supportive, and kind person I’ve ever met. Don’t even get me started on your smoking hot looks and your fine body.”

She laughs but the love pouring from her eyes says it all.

“Will you do me the honor of being my wife?”

She begins to nod her head, bobbing profusely, and then she bursts into tears. “Yes, yes, I’ll marry you.”

I stand, kiss her, and we hug. When we break apart, I reach down and speak to her belly. “Did you hear that? Your mom is going to be my wife.” I place the ring on her finger and it sparkles against the hot sun.

“I love it,” she says of the princess cut diamond settled in a simple platinum band.

Patty laughs and it’s the best sound.

“My whole family knew, didn’t they?” she asks.

“They did,” I admit.

We continue to walk, and we loop around the pond and head back to our picnic spot. We take a seat back on the blanket.

Patty looks around and she gets a contemplative look.

“What is it?” I ask.

“Do you think there is anyone around here? Like do people walk around in these parts?” she asks, and she bites her lip.

“I don’t know. The woman at the main building explained it was pretty secluded here. . .”

Patty cocks her brow.

“Damn,” I say. I’m on her like a cheetah after its prey. I slowly kiss her lips and she tugs me down on top of her. “Easy there. I don’t want to crush the little one.”

“He’ll be fine,” she says and then her eyes widen.

“Patty, what did you do?” I ask.

She looks mortified. The tech gave us an envelope of sonogram pictures some zoomed in to the sex and some less zoomed in. We chose to look only at the pictures that were less zoomed in and said we would wait.

“It wasn’t on purpose. I dropped the envelope and all the pictures fell to the ground and I couldn’t help myself.”

“Oh, you couldn’t help yourself,” I accuse, pinning her arms above her head. She squiggles a little. “So, you are telling me we are having a boy?”

“Yes,” she sighs.

“I love you.”

“I love you,” she replies, and then we kiss and make love under a blue California sky.
