“Who was he? What happened?” Ellie asks.

“I can’t say,” I reply.

“Holy shit, did you have an affair with the president or something?” Eden asks.

I burst into laughter. “No, but it isn’t something I can talk about.”

“But you can still have fun. Why didn’t you take any of those guys up on their offer to dance tonight?” Amelia asks.

I look up to the door. “Evan.” I fall sideways off my chair like a fool and have to hold on to the table to get back up.

Ellie looks over at me like I’ve lost it. “Do you have vertigo?”

“Not vertigo. Evan just walked in with his friends. With players from the team,” I stutter.

Crap. What the hell is wrong with me? I don’t want to hook up with any guy in this bar because I was comparing them all to Evan. He seems to be the only guy I want. This can’t be happening. I sure as hell am not going to make that confession to my girlfriends.

The girls look to the door.

“Don’t look,” I whisper-shout. “Now they’ll know we saw them.” I duck my head.

“Holy shit, they’re all so hot,” Eden mutters, not looking in their direction.

Tell me about it. They are in peak physical shape with the height to match because of the type of sport hockey is. The guys are all decked out in dress shirts and slacks. They clean up nicely.

I can’t believe Evan came here.

“Guys, just play it cool,” I mutter with my gaze locked on the table.

“What is going on with you?” Eden says. “You’re usually so chill. I’ve never seen you like this before.” My eyes snap up to hers. It’s like she has a light bulb moment as her green eyes turn round and recognition strikes. “Oh, you have the hots for Evan. This all makes sense now.”

“Would you stop it?” I swat at her. “Quiet. He can’t hear you say that.”

I’m frantic. I’m a bloody mess.

“Fuck me,” Ellie says from beside me. “Patty, you’re in love.”

“I’m not in freaking love. All of you just play it cool. Don’t throw me under the bus,” I mumble as I spot Evan walking our way.

The guys walk up to our table, and I put on my game face of a welcoming smile.

“Hi, guys, what are you all doing here?” I stand from the table and get up to greet each of them.

“You clean up nice,” Brett laughs.

Evan elbows him and he flinches.

“Sorry, I was trying to be polite because, fuck, I can’t believe you’re our physical therapist,” he says, shaking his head.

“Very funny, Brett,” I reply.

“Sorry about him,” Evan apologizes. “I told the guys what a cool place this was and they wanted to check it out. Hope we aren’t intruding. I didn’t realize you’d be here.” His eyes sweep up and down my body. It’s as if his gaze is made up of lasers burning a hot trail through my insides. I wish I could shut whatever this is down, but I can’t because it seems to have a mind of its own.

“Yeah, no worries.” I wave him off with what I hope is nonchalance.

I go on to introduce the girls to the guys. Brett and Kaleb are usually with Evan, but I’m surprised to see Aaron and Brad. The girls all have stars in their eyes.

Ellie yawns. “I’m heading out. One of you guys can have my chair.”
