“I want you like I’ve never wanted another woman,” he confesses with such deep conviction it guts me. I want to lean in and press my lips to his. Hell, I want him to pick me up, and wrap my legs around his waist, and carry me out of here to somewhere private.

I swallow hard. I’m losing control.

I’m sucked into the depths of chocolate brown eyes.

“I need space,” I mutter as panic strikes. My heart beats a mile a minute as I take off. I don’t think about what others are thinking of this interaction, I just need to get away from Evan because I clearly don’t think straight when he is near me.

I head to the ladies’ room. I want to splash cool water on my face, but it will mess my makeup. I settle on taking some slow deep breaths as I lean on the counter. When I’ve gained back some of my composure, I realize how Evan and I must have looked on the dance floor, breathing hard, hungry eyes, and the small touches. Shit.

As I leave the bathroom, I come face-to-face with Andrew. “We need to talk,” he says, standing tall. He has his hands tucked into his navy-blue suit and his brows are furrowed like something pains him.

“We don’t need to do anything,” I snap, and I get ready to walk away.

“I was messed up, Patty. I had a lot of issues I was dealing with, and I didn’t mean to treat you the way I did. I need you to know,” he starts, and I stop in my tracks as my breaths become labored.

I look around and, although the coast is clear, I don’t feel comfortable doing this here.

“You disregarded me like trash after I lost our baby. Do you know how painful that was?” My voice becomes louder, and I realize I have to keep it down, but my insides are shaking and this is too much.

“Patty, there you are,” Evan says, looking between me and Andrew. “Are you okay?”

“Listen, buddy, we’re having a private conversation,” Andrew snaps at Evan.

“I don’t think so, buddy,” Evan rebuts, sarcastically snapping back.

“Just get lost and give us a minute, would you?” Andrew brushes him off.

Evan moves his head from side to side and then he punches Andrew square across the jaw.

A woman behind us shrieks and then Daddy is there. “What the hell is going on here?” He looks at Evan. I think he just saw him punch Andrew. Then he looks at Andrew and finally at me. It’s then I feel my tear-stained cheeks.

“What’s going on?” Daddy asks.

“I—” The tears fall down my cheeks.

“Myles, I can explain,” Andrew says, and I watch Daddy’s nostrils flare.

“What can you explain, Andrew?” Daddy asks, looking at Andrew like he is an enemy, even though he probably doesn’t understand why.

“I’m sorry about everything. I know she was young, and I screwed up. I need you to forgive me,” Andrew grovels, and I watch the confusion on Daddy’s face morph into a mix of sadness and anger.

“Andrew, stop,” I beg. He must think I told my parents what happened.

“Patty?” Daddy asks and his voice cracks.

“Shit,” Andrew murmurs, realizing what he has just done, and his eyes turn wide as he begins to back away. Only Daddy closes the steps between us and takes hold of Andrew’s collar.

“What the fuck is going on here, McNab?” Daddy seethes, and I’ve never seen his face so red and angry before.

“We were both young. I really loved her,” Andrew blubbers.

“You want to fucking tell me you slept with my daughter? How old was she?” Daddy asks.

“Nineteen,” Andrew replies as Daddy pushes him abruptly into a wall.

“What the hell is going on here?” Mom’s voice pulls me and Daddy away from the train wreck. I realize I am a bawling mess. “Patty, sweetheart. . .”

“This asshole. . .” Daddy begins but he can’t even finish his sentence.
