When I’m done with Connor, I notice Evan waiting. Jamie must have gone to speak with my dad so we’re all alone. Evan is wearing one of those thermal tops he wears under his gear. It hugs him like a glove. He’s also wearing the matching pants that kind of look like leggings, which shouldn’t look good on a guy, but they look amazing on Evan with his toned legs and the fine globes of his ass. My mouth waters. Pregnancy has made me super horny. Now that I know things are progressing the way they should, I feel like I want to indulge in sex, even though I know I can’t go to Evan with such a request.

“Hi, Patty, everything okay? I heard you took the morning off,” Evan greets, sauntering in here with all his glory.

“All good. Just had an appointment,” I reply. I can’t do this here. We need to be somewhere private and before a game is a terrible idea. It could throw Evan off and someone could accidentally hear us talking. Still, a part of me suddenly wants to blurt, “Hey, Evan, guess what? We are having a baby in about six months.”

Get a grip, Patty.

“Okay.” He nods. He looks like he hasn’t shaved in about a week and he’s growing a short beard.

“I like the beard on you,” I tell him because I feel like I’ve been so closed off lately and it hasn’t been fair to him.

He watches me carefully and then with the back of his hand he rubs at it, and I wish it were me reaching out and touching him. “Thanks. Trying something new.”

“What brings you in today?” I ask because I still have a professional role to fulfill.

“My arm,” he says, rolling his shoulder. “And my ankle. I think it needs taping.” He fell sideways on it last game.

“Sure, choose a treatment table,” I tell him and for some reason those words make my cheeks burn.

Evan gets on the table and I do some massage, starting at his shoulder.

“That feels really good,” he says, his voice husky and deep. It reminds me of the night we had sex multiple times. I begin to envision Evan driving into me.

“Patty?” he asks. When I look down, he looks like he’s waiting.

“Sorry, did you say something?” I ask him.

“I asked if you were feeling better. You seem a little off lately,” he says.

“I’m pregnant,” I blurt. Then I begin to hyperventilate as Evan sits up quickly and swings himself off the bed.

“What did you just say?” he asks with wide brown eyes.

My palm is on my chest and my heart beats a mile a minute.

“I-I.” I’m shaking so hard I can’t speak.

“Come here,” he says, and he guides me to a chair at the side of the room. I take a seat, which is good because I’m feeling dizzy. “Did you just say you’re pregnant?”

My head bobs up and down.

Evan freezes. “Is it mine?”

I gasp, “Excuse me?”

“I mean, we’re friends, no relationship. . .” he mutters.

“Yes, you nitwit. There hasn’t been anyone else,” I retort, and I shoot up to my feet and pace. “This is not how I wanted to say this. This is terrible, oh gawd, I think I’m going to be sick.” I run into my office in time to lift my small trash bin off the floor and vomit.

I hear Evan hiss behind me.

“Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.” He shakes his head. “That was a stupid thing to say. You caught me off guard.”

“No, I guess. . .I mean why would you think it was yours? It was only one night.”

“Patty,” he soothes, and something about him softens from the look in his warm eyes to the movements of his body. He takes me in his arms. “This is going to be okay.”

He’s hugging me and rubbing my back and it all feels very confusing, but he’s being supportive. He isn’t running like the place is on fire.
