“I’m so sorry. I don’t even know why I blurted that. I mean, you have to be on the ice in two hours,” I apologize profusely, and Evan pulls back and releases me then looks over his shoulder.

“We should get out of here,” he urges.

“I can’t leave now. The guys are coming in for pregame treatments.”

“Shit, okay.” He runs his fingers through his hair. “We need to talk after the game.”

“Okay,” I agree.

“How far along are you? Like how does this work?” he asks.

“You need to keep it down. No one can know,” I whisper.

“Right, okay,” he says. Then he takes a step toward me and moves a stray piece of hair that is sitting on my cheek, and he tucks it behind my ear. “I’m here, Patty. I’m not going anywhere.”

His words feel like a balm and a prick all in one shot. I don’t know why, other than my hormones feel out of control and this day has been one hell of a roller-coaster ride.

“Later, Evan,” I say and then Wolfe walks into the therapy room. He looks between us.

“Sorry to interrupt,” he states.

“No interruption, Evan, you can lie on table number two I will be with you shortly.”

“Wolfe, how can I help you?” I ask.

“I need my right hand taped,” he says.

“Sure, no problem. Just have a seat in one of the chairs.”

Wolfe takes a seat. “Evan, I’ll just tape him up, it will only take a minute.”

“No problem,” Evan replies.

Then Jamie comes back from talking with my father. “Connor is on tonight.”

“Okay.” I nod.

When I’m done with Wolfe, I move back to Evan.

It’s become a task to treat him. To even touch him without feeling the knowing electricity that runs between us hot and wild. I breathe through treating his arm and then he says he’s good and has to go, but a knowing look passes between us.

Things get even busier as we get closer to game time and more guys pour into the room. Some for pregame stretching and some for treatment.

When the game starts, I find Skylar with the kids and go to sit with her.

“Hi, Crew,” I greet and give him a hug.

“Hi, Aunt Patty. This is my friend, Sydney,” he introduces the girl.

Sydney is shy and tilts her head and gives me a smile.

“Nice to meet you, Sydney,” I say.

“Don’t worry, Aunt Patty is super cool,” Crew assures.

“Thanks, sweetie,” I say to Crew.

“You know, I know your daddy,” I tell Sydney and her beautiful blue eyes snap to mine. “I help him with his exercises. Are you excited to watch him play?”
