She nods and puts her fingers in her mouth.

“She doesn’t talk to adults,” Skylar whispers. “But she’s taken to Crew. When they play alone together, I’ll hear her talking, otherwise she doesn’t speak.”

“That’s sweet,” I say.

“What is going on with you?” Skylar asks.

“A lot, but I can’t say right now,” I reply.

“Gah,” she groans. “You have the most frustrating schedule. We never have time to talk anymore.”

“Sorry.” I wince. “I’ll make time.”

We continue to watch the game. The team is playing Anaheim tonight and the guys are pumped. Both sides are playing hard. We are getting close to playoff season and they want a secured spot.

Connor is doing well. He’s already blocked a good number of shots. In fact, he’s been doing well all season.

Wolfe shoots the puck across the ice and Evan and Brad zip down the ice, each of them with a player from Anaheim on their tail. One of the players checks Evan into the boards and I wince. Skylar looks at me with her eyebrow cocked. Evan recovers quickly and zips around the back of the net with the puck. He shoots to Liam, and he scores. The crowd goes wild. It’s always nice to be home and have our fans cheering.

By the time we get to the second period, we are tied two to two. Sydney and Crew aren’t even watching the game. They are looking at something on Crew’s phone. Their heads are touching as they watch whatever it is with intrigue.

During second period, one of the guys from Anaheim begins to brawl with Brett. Kaleb moves in to help him and it turns into a fight between two of our guys and three of theirs. The other players on our team don’t get involved though. They like to play a clean game filled with good sportsmanship.

I yawn. “It’s been a long day.”

Then the same guy who fought with Brett shoots the puck straight at our net. Connor stops it but the guy is persistent and fights the puck. The refs blow the whistle. Connor ends up in the splits and then falls over.

“Oh no,” I sigh.

“They better get a penalty for this,” I murmur.

“That was so not cool,” Skylar says. “But look at my man throwing punches. Damn, it’s hot.”

“Sky, it’s her dad,” I eye Sydney.

“Shoot.” She winces. “I hope he’s okay.”

The ref goes to check on him. He’s moving and talking but something is wrong. When he’s taken off the ice on a stretcher my heart speeds up. Sydney watches her father and then looks at Crew. Crew shrugs.

“He’s going to be okay,” Skylar says.

“I should go and check on him,” I state.

When I head back through the tunnel, I head straight to our assessment room. Connor is with the doctor and our assistant, Coach Tyler Cowan, is with him.

“How is it looking?” I ask Coach Cowan.

“His hip seems to be out,” he says. “We’re sending him to the hospital.”

Connor lies on the stretcher in a lot of pain.

“Patty,” he calls.

“Yes, Connor?” I say, walking up to him.

“Sydney. . . I saw you sitting with her during the game. Do you think you can ask Skylar if she can sleep at their place tonight? I—” His voice cracks and he’s sweating pretty bad.

“Don’t worry, Sydney is in good hands. We’ll all take care of her and I’m sure Skylar would be happy to have her. I’ll let her know.”
