“I know this sucks. I’ll try to book the next ultrasound for when the season is over.”

“You book that ultrasound when your doctor says you need to, it shouldn’t be dependent on the season. I’m just losing my mind over here. I’m excited about this, Patty. Like really excited.”

His words make my heart skip a beat. “I am too. . . why don’t you come over to my parents’ tonight for dinner? I need to show them the sonogram picture and we can all enjoy it together.”

“Won’t that be weird?” he asks.

“They know you’re the baby daddy,” I remind him.

“I try not to think about that. Honestly, otherwise, I would be shitting myself around your father during every practice and game. You sure he’s good with it?” Evan asks for the umpteenth time.

“Yes.” I accentuate the S. “My parents just want me to be happy.”

He falls silent.

“Evan?”

“If you think it’s okay. I’ll be there,” he confirms.

“Good,” I reply. I feel terrible about not taking him to these initial appointments, but we are in a sticky situation.

We get off the phone and Mom calls. At this rate I’m going to be late for my appointment.

“Hi, Mom,” I say quickly. “I’m just getting ready to leave for my appointment.”

“I’m coming with you, I just finished my appointment, I’m already in the car and my ETA for your doctor’s office is twenty minutes,” Mom states. I hear the excitement dripping from her tone.

“That’s amazing.” I blow out a breath, feeling relief I will at least have Mom there with me if I can’t have Evan. “Let me go and I’ll meet you there.”

“Sure, honey, see you there,” she squeals. Her excitement is contagious as I smile.

I quickly head downstairs and into the elevator. Then I get in my car and blast some music, feeling good for the first time in a long time. I hate deceiving the team. Evan hates it too. Those guys are his good friends, but how do you control who you fall for? We didn’t mean to catch feelings for each other. The guys on the team shouldn’t have to suffer the fallout. It’s not even like this should be considered an affair. We are both single and available. These rules suck.

I make it over to Dr. Reid’s office just in time. I’m lucky to find street parking too.

I head upstairs and see Mom waiting outside the office.

She waves and gives me a hug.

“I feel so nervous again,” I admit.

“You remember what Dr. Berzin said. Everything looks good,” she reminds.

“But nothing in my life is ever straightforward,” I huff.

“Oh, honey.” She tucks a piece of hair behind my ear. “Life isn’t about everything always being perfect, but we need to see the good in everything, and right now, this is a good thing for our family.” She pats my stomach.

“Thanks,” I sigh and hug her. She has been my rock and my cheerleader every step of the way.

“Let’s do this,” I say.

She extends her hand for me to lead the way.

“Everything looks good, Ms. Sanders,” the technician confirms. “Looks like your due date is this October 3rd. The size and heartbeat are strong.”

A wave of calm washes over me. “Thank you. When do I find out the sex of the baby?”

The technician gives me a warm smile. “That won’t be for another seven weeks. You can book that appointment with the front desk on your way out.”
