“Thanks,” I say again.

“Here are the sonogram pictures,” she offers, passing them to me. “There isn’t much to see, but the next one in seven weeks will look like a real baby.”

I think in my mind,in seven weeks the season will be over.We have Skylar and Liam’s wedding in Napa Valley after that. It feels weird not to be able to share this part of my life with Skylar. Especially after everything we’ve been through together, but I don’t want to put her in a position of keeping secrets from Liam.

We leave the doctor’s office and Mom gives me a hug. “I’m so happy I got to see my grandbaby.”

Her words cause a wave of emotion to wash over me. “This is real. It’s happening. Until now it kind of felt like I was dreaming.”

“It’s real baby. Tonight you can come show your daddy these pictures. He’s going to be over the moon happy.”

My stomach swims with happy butterflies. “I told Evan to come,” I broach carefully. Mom knows we’ve been exploring a relationship. As a lawyer, she felt obligated to inform me of all the rules I was breaking, but as a mom, she was happy to see me trying to be in a relationship with my baby daddy.

“That’s okay. He should come. Poor guy. . .I feel for him not being able to come today for the appointment.” Her lips form an arch.

“We are in an impossible situation,” I sigh.

“No mountain peak is impossible to reach, Patty. Where there is a will there is a way,” Mom says.

“And destroy everything Daddy and Evan have worked for?” I question.

Mom blows out a breath. “Tonight, we celebrate. We’ll find a way to work through this if Evan is the one you want to be with.” She squeezes my hand. “I have to get back to the office. Anything in particular you feel like eating tonight?”

“Gah, I don’t know. All I want is junk food,” I admit.

“Honey, I was the same way when I was pregnant with you and your brother. Junk food it is.”

“I don’t think Evan and Daddy will appreciate that too much. We’re in playoff season. Things are about to get rough.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll have everyone covered.” She winks. “I really do have to run.”

“See you later.” I give her another hug and she takes off for her car.

I head back to my car and when I do, I send Evan a pic of the baby.

He calls me a second later. “Where are you?”

“I just left the doctor’s office. My mom came with me,” I say.

“Good, I’m glad you weren’t alone.”

“Everything is good, Evan. The baby is growing like it should be and the measurements were all okay.”

“I’m really happy to hear that, baby. I’m here in my apartment. Why don’t you come over and I will cook you something to eat?”

“I’m sorry. I told the girls I would meet them for a quick lunch. I haven’t seen them in forever.”

“Go have fun,” Evan urges. “I’m going to go work out. With all the junk I’ve been eating, I need to put in extra time at the gym.”

“You don’t have to eat takeout every time I do,” I remind him.

“It’s rude of me to let you eat alone.” His response brings a smile to my face.

“You’re sweet,” I say to him.

“Don’t say that,” he groans. “Say that I’m sexy, or good-looking or an Adonis in bed, but don’t call me sweet.”

I laugh. “You’re sexy and all the above.”
