Anna helps Syd into her dress. It’s a soft pink gown made of chiffon with flowers around the waist. Syd swivels her hips, enjoying the swish of the dress flowing around her.

When I look in the mirror, it’s like I see Nana staring back at me. This was her dress. She and Nonno were so in love until the end. I had hoped to one day to have a love like theirs.

“Are you okay?” Nora asks. She places her hand on my shoulder and watches me with concern, and I burst into tears.

“Oh no. Don’t cry, your makeup will run,” Nora warns frantically, while she searches the room for a tissue.

She passes one to me and I dab my eyes. That’s when I realize Syd is watching me.

“How about we go to the kitchen to see if we have some chocolate chip cookies?” Anna says to her, guiding her from the room.

“But is Ellie okay?” she asks.

Sweet girl. My heart is breaking.

“What’s going on?” Nora asks.

I blow out a breath, trying to settle my stomach which is turning at hurricane speeds.

“You’re scaring me,” Nora says. “Whatever it is, spit it out now.”

I feel like there is a storm brewing inside me. One I can’t contain anymore.

“Promise me you’ll keep the secret,” I say to her.

I need to confess what I’ve done. It’s eating away at me. I thought I could go through with it but I’ve always been a terrible liar for a reason. I don’t like lying. I value honesty.

Nora’s dark brows furrow. She’s waiting for me to spill the beans.

I need to confess. She has to know what I’ve done. When I think of how much money this wedding cost Nana, I get even more ill.

Nora guides me back to the chair. “Can you sit in that thing? You look like you are going to pass out.”

I nod and sit in the chair. The fabric of my dress isn’t very giving but there is enough room for me to sit and breathe. Even though it suddenly feels hard to breathe, or maybe I’m breathing too fast.

“You’re scaring me, Ellie,” Nora warns. “You aren’t going to faint, are you?”

“I’ve done something terrible. . .”

The door to the room swings open and Connor is standing there in his tuxedo and black bow tie. His hair is slicked back and my heart stops from seeing him. He is so handsome. So perfect.

Syd is by his side.

“Oh no,” Anna says, running up to the door after them. “You shouldn’t see the bride before the wedding. It’s bad luck,” she cries.

“I need to speak with Ellie,” Connor says, holding only my gaze.

Anna, Nora, and Syd all look between me and Connor.

I nod. “It’s fine. Give us a minute, please.”

Anna guides Syd out of the room and Nora follows before turning around and watching me wide-eyed.

The door closes and Connor comes straight toward me.

“I was just about to confess to Nora,” I laugh because clearly my nerves have made me lose my mind.

“I’m glad you didn’t,” Connor declares.
