Crew runs up to Syd and pulls her away.

“We’re going to be in trouble with those two,” Ellie giggles.

“Tell me about it.” I roll my eyes playfully. “Luckily, we have some time before they are teenagers,” I say and Ellie gives me a knowing look. “I’ve got a surprise for you.”

She freezes.

“You can keep dancing,” I laugh.

“What is it?” she asks, watching me suspiciously.

“I booked us a honeymoon. We leave tonight,” I say to her.

“What? When? What if I hadn’t agreed to this real wedding?” she asks with a sly smirk.

“Oh, I knew you’d agree. I’ve felt you writhing beneath me, I’ve watched the way you look at me. I was just a damn coward, hiding behind my fears. Now my eyes are wide open,” I assure.

“You’re cocky.” She grins. “Cocky and grumpy. That’s quite a mix.”

“You think you can handle it?” I ask, cocking my right brow.

“You know I can.” She smiles victoriously. “Now where are you taking me?”

“I said it’s a surprise,” I retort, knowing I am getting her stirred up.

Her gaze turns heated. “Keep looking at me like that, sweetheart, and I’ll take you into one of your nana’s spare bedrooms and have my way with you.” Just being close to her gets me all hot and bothered.

“Sweetheart, huh?” she says. “I like it.”

“Good, and my warning stands,” I confirm, eyeing her like I mean business.

“You aren’t scaring me, Donaldson, in fact I like that idea.” She grins, raising her brows in challenge.

“Fuck it.” I look around at our guests. Everyone looks busy enough. Even Kaleb is chatting up one of the staff working the wedding.

I take Ellie by the hand and walk right off the dance floor. Nana cuts us off with a stern look, holding on to her walker.

“Don’t run off just yet. I have a word for both of you,” she says, using a tone that tells me we are in trouble. Even in her old age, you can see this woman is a force to be reckoned with.

“What is it, Nana?” Ellie asks, sounding worried she reaches out to touch her grandma’s shoulder.

“Do you think I’m a fool, granddaughter of mine?” Ellie slinks back. “Do you think I don’t know you wanted to marry this man to give me my dying wish?” Nana asks, staring us both down.

Holy shit. We are busted.

“Nana, I can explain. . .” Ellie mutters.

Nana’s laughter rolls out of her in a burst. She isn’t upset at all. “I love you so much, dear girl. I can’t believe the lengths you were willing to go to make my soul happy.”

“Nana. . . I . . .” Ellie mumbles.

Nana holds her hand up. “You listen,” she demands. “Karma can be a bitch but she can also be kind. You were willing to sacrifice yourself to give me my dying wish. Really, all I wanted to know was that you would be loved. That you’d be taken care of. While you were trying to deceive me, I see you really fell in love. I knew he was a good catch that first time we met. Connor, you take care of our girl,” Nana says and blinks.

“I promise I will. We didn’t mean to deceive you. Ellie’s intentions were pure,” I argue.

“I know, Ellie has the purest heart. I’m just happy she met someone worthy of her.” Nana smiles. “Now give this old woman a hug and be on your way. I remember what it’s like to be young and unable to keep your hands off each other.”

Ellie and I both hug Nana. I hear her whisper in Ellie’s ear that she did good.
