CHAPTERSEVEN

Connor

Patty leaves after my private therapy session, and I follow her orders and try to walk around the apartment, taking small steps. It’s painful but important for me to move around a little. Ellie has gone out to see her nana, and Syd is in school when I hear a knock on the door. By the rowdiness outside I’m guessing I know who is on the other side. When I open the door, Brett, Liam, Evan, Kaleb, Matt, and Wolfe greet me.

“Hey, guys, come on in.” I wave them in.

They are already pouring into the apartment before I finish the sentence. Since the team made it to the playoffs they have been travelling and training a lot, so they’ve been too busy to come around.

They all take a seat on my sectional, and I slowly make my way to the recliner so I can have my legs elevated.

“If you guys want anything, go ahead and help yourself in the kitchen. I can’t do too much walking,” I say.

“Shit, man, that’s tough but you’re definitely looking better,” Brett says.

“Yeah,” Kaleb agrees. “I saw those small steps you were taking. Means things are improving.”

“They are. Patty’s been treating me,” I say.

“How’s the nanny situation going? You happy with Ellie?” Liam asks.

My brows furrow because how does he know about Ellie?

“Oh, my bad, Skylar is good friends with Patty so. . .” his voice trails.

“Skylar’s friend is your nanny?” Brett asks with raised brows, looking intrigued.

“Don’t go there,” I warn because, shit, I’ve gone there so many times and it isn’t okay.

“Dude, I’ve seen Ellie,” Brett says. “Don’t warn me away. That woman is hotter than hell. Shit, I wouldn’t mind her being my nanny.”

I shake my head. “You’re a grown man.”

“So?” he asks.

“She’s actually kind of stepped in as my nurse too.” I wince. “My nurse got injured and had to take a leave. Ellie stepped up. She’s been great with Syd.”

“That’s awesome. It’s a big bonus to have good help with the kids,” Wolfe says, and he would know because he’s a father of two.

“Bro, it’s been huge,” I agree.

“You literally just said she is your nurse. That’s seriously hot,” Matt adds. “Don’t tell me you haven’t thought of tapping that.”

“Do you have to be so vulgar?” I reply. Obviously, I’ve thought about Ellie in all kinds of compromising positions, but I’m not sharing that info.

“Dude, you said it yourself. You’ve been alone with Syd for a long time. Skylar was alone with Crew too and even though she had Patty living with her, it isn’t easy to not have a partner. You must feel like something is missing from your life,” Liam says because he likes to get into deep conversations. Personally, I’d rather stay away from those. My life is complicated enough without me having to psychoanalyze myself all the time.

Liam and Skylar were high school sweethearts who reunited recently. I get that his concern is coming from a good place, but I need to stay focused on Syd and me. Bringing a third person into our equation is asking for trouble.

“It sucks to be alone, but Syd and I have always been on our own. I don’t know how to integrate a woman into our lives,” I confess. This may have been my first year on this team, but I’ve bonded with these men. They had my back when I was in the hospital, and they are always in my corner for whatever I need.

“With Ellie, you don’t really have to integrate,” Evan says with a shrug of his shoulders.

“I mean, he does have a point,” Wolfe adds.

“Not you too,” I say to him.

“What? I couldn’t imagine raising my kids without Rebel. She is my rock. We’re in it together. It makes things so much better,” Wolfe says with hearts in his eyes.
