“Look at you girls.” He smiles wide, his gaze shifting from me to Syd. “You both look beautiful.”

“Thanks, Daddy.”

“Thanks, Connor.” I blush. “You’re looking good yourself.” I lick my lips, even though I’ve applied red lipstick, and Connor groans.

I wonder if we will remain abstinent until the wedding or if he’ll finally give in and take me.

“How are we getting to Nana’s? Are we taking the bus?” I ask.

“We are definitely not taking the bus. One, I can’t really walk and two there is no way I can climb steps,” Connor reminds. “Can you drive my car?” he asks, looking at me.

“Oh no,” I say, accentuating the O and stretching it out until my cheeks hollow. “I haven’t driven since I was an undergrad in college.”

“It’s like riding a bike, Ellie. It’s something you don’t forget,” he declares and for some reason my mind goes to sex. It’s been so long I’m sure I forgot how to do that too.

“I forgot,” I assure.

“I’ll call an Uber,” he says.

We all take light coats and head down in the elevator so we can wait for the Uber downstairs.

When we get on the elevator Kaleb, who is Connor’s teammate, is in the elevator car heading downstairs too.

“Hey, man,” Connor greets him, and they fist bump each other.

“You guys all look s-spiffy. Heading somewhere special?” Kaleb asks Connor.

“Daddy is marrying Ellie. We are going to tell Nana,” Syd answers.

Kaleb’s eyebrows hit his forehead and he laughs.

“She’s j-joking right?” Kaleb says, looking from Connor to me.

I just shrug my shoulders and give him an impish smile.

“She’s serious, man. I’m getting married,” Connor says, looking uneasy.

“You just said there was nothing going on between you two when Brett was prodding you,” Kaleb reminds. I find it interesting he’s spoken with his friends about me. I wonder what he says.

Connor shrugs. “I think a congratulations are in order,” he retorts to Kaleb. He seems to enjoy he’s messing with this guy.

I lift up my ring finger to show him my dazzling diamond.

“Damn,” Kaleb says with his jaw dropped. “Congrats. Are you having an engagement party? We’ll be in town Friday night and have the night off.”

“We are,” I answer for Connor.

“Ellie, I can barely walk,” he protests.

Kaleb watches us like we are under a magnifying glass.

“You’re getting better every day,” I remind.

“Fine,” Connor concedes grumpily.

Syd cheers and Kaleb watches me carefully.

“I’ll let the guys know, better the news comes from me,” Connor mutters. “Where are you off to?” Connor asks Kaleb.
