Kaleb looks alarmed as he looks to me for help or maybe he wants answers too.

“We didn’t get around to inviting everyone. It’s been a complicated week,” I mumble.

“You and Ellie are engaged?” Patty asks, her tone high-pitched and her eyes wide as wheels.

“Ye. . .ss. . . .we. . .are. . .” I stutter.

“Connor, what is going on?” Patty asks.

I squeeze my eyes shut, but doing that doesn’t make the problem disappear.

“You’ll need to ask Ellie,” I answer. I don’t know if she wants to tell Patty the truth or not. The fewer people who know about our arrangement the better, since it isn’t exactly legal.

Patty stares at me like I just told her we landed on the moon. “But what in the actual fuck?”

The elevator door opens. “Catch you both later.” Kaleb waves and runs off.

I nod. “Yeah.”

“I’m sorry, Patty. Ellie obviously didn’t want to leave you in the dark. We’ve been dealing with my ex coming to town and lawyers. Our engagement kind of slipped through the cracks.”

She narrows her eyes on me. “Okay.”

When it’s her floor she says, “I’ll see you at regular time tomorrow for our session.”

“I appreciate everything you’ve done for me, Patty. Including taking me today.”

“I know and you’re welcome,” she replies, and then she looks at me like she doesn’t know me and exits the elevator.

I stare at my phone for the umpteenth time today to see if I have a message from Ellie, but there is nothing.

I just hope they come home soon because I can’t handle not knowing how they are both getting by with Sybil and Warren.

CHAPTERNINETEEN

Ellie

I’m so done with this day as I head up in the elevator with Syd, Sybil, and Warren. Sybil’s blue eyes are narrowed on me. It’s laughable if she thinks I give a shit. She is seething though, and I wonder how Connor is going to react to his overdramatic ex. I’m guessing it wouldn’t be a good time to alert her that her fiancé is a douchebag.

We get off the elevator and Sybil runs ahead of Syd and me. She bangs on the door making a ruckus. Syd looks up to me and holds my hand even tighter while Warren trails behind, looking like his fiancée’s behavior is sane.

Sybil is banging on the door.

“I have a key,” I say from behind her just as Connor swings opens the door, looking wide-eyed.

Sybil storms past him.

“Your nanny has some real nerve,” she huffs and then spins around.

Connor’s brows shoot up and he looks me in the eyes, trying to gauge without words what is going on.

“She screwed up our whole day,” Sybil rants, waving her hands in the air. “I wanted to bond with our daughter, but it wasn’t possible.”

“First of all, would you calm down?” Connor urges. He steps in close to Sybil. “This tantrum you’re having isn’t good for our daughter to see.”

Sybil straightens her shoulders and lifts her chin. “This trip was about me and Warren bonding with Sydney.”

Connor turns his attention away from Sybil. I have to give him credit for not getting flustered. “You must be the new fiancé,” he says to Warren. “A proper introduction is necessary.” He walks over to Warren. “I’m Connor Donaldson. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
